Course: B.E Mining   University: Visvesvaraya Technological University

PART - A
1. a) Explain the objectives of Surveying. (04 marks)
b) Differentiate between Plane and Geodetic Survey. (06 marks)
c) A chain 20m length is used for a survey was found to be 20.10m at the
beginning and 20.30m at the end of the work. The area of the plan drawn
to a scale of 1cm = 8m was measured with the help of a planimeter and
was found to be 32.56 Sq.cm. Find the true area of the field. (10 marks)

2. a) Define a Base line, Tie line and a check line in a chain triangulation
survey. (06 marks)
b) Explain the methods of overcoming the obstacles like river, pond,
and building. (06 marks)
c) To determine the obstructed distance AB across the river, a perpendicular
AC measuring 10mtrs was erected using an optical square at ‘C’ a point
‘D’ was fixed. Such that BCD was a right angled triangle. The measured
distance of AD was 5mtr. Determine the obstructed distance AB. (08 marks)

3. a) Differentiate between whole circle bearing and Quadrangle bearing. (04 marks)
b) Define the terms:
i) True and Magnetic bearing
ii) Fore and Back bearing
iii) Dip and Declination
iv) Isogonic and Agonic lines (08 marks)

c) The following angles was observed in clock wise direction in an open
traverse
Angle ABC = 124 º 15’ BCD = 156 º 30’ CDE = 102 º 0’
DEF = 95 º 15’ EFG = 215 º 45’
Magnetic bearing of the line AB was 241 º 30’. What could be the bearing
of the line FG?. (08 marks)

4. a) Name the accessories of plane table survey with their functions. (06 marks)
b) What id orientation of plane table survey Explain any two methods
with the merits and demerits. (06 marks)
c) Define two point problem in plane table and explain how to solve it. (08 marks)
PART – B

5. a) Differentiate between Height of Instrument and Rise and fall method. (04marks)
b) What is sensitivity of the bubble tube? What are the factors affecting it. (04 marks)
c) The following consecutive readings were taken with a level and 5mtrs
leveling staff on continuously sloping ground at a common interval of
20mtrs: 0.385, 1.030, 1.925, 2.825, 3.730, 4.685, 0.625, 2.605, 3.110,
4.485. The reduced level of the first point was 200m. Rule out a page of
a level field book and enter the above readings. Calculate the reduced levels
of the points by rise and fall method , also the gradient of the line joining
the first and the last point. (12 marks)

6. a) Explain the uses and characteristics of contours. (10 marks)
b) Name the various method of contouring and explain any one in detail. (10 marks)

7. a) Name the temporary and permanent adjustment of the vernier
Theodolite. (04 marks)
b) Explain the various errors involved in theodolite survey. (08 marks)
c) Explain in detail the method of measuring vertical angle using a
vernier theodolite. (08 marks)

8. a) Name the methods of traverse carried out using vernier theodolite and
explain any one method in detail. (10 marks)
b) Given below are the consecutive coordinates of a theodolite traverse
ABCDFA. Balance the traverse and find the adjusted values and
independent coordinates, assuming that those of A are( 0N, 500E) (10 marks)

Line Latitude Departure
AB + 762.00 + 764.20
