SECTION - I


1.a)Explain Compton effect and how it is experimentally verified.[Marks 6]

b)Acinema hall has a volume of 8500m3. It is required to have reverberation time of 1.6 sec.What will be the total absorption in the hall?[Marks 3]

c)What are the properties of electromagnetic radiations?[Marks 4]

2.a)What is magnetostriction effect? Explain magnetostriction oscillator with transistorised circuit diagram.[Marks 4]

b)Describe dual nature of matter.Derive an expression for the De Broglie wavelength.[Marks 4]

c)Determine the wavelength of primary X-ray which are scattered by graphite at an angle of 60 degrees in Compton scattering
The wavelength of scattered X-ray is 2.54*10^-11m.

3.Write a note on any three of following:[Marks 3*4=12]
1)Acoustics of building

2)Piezo-electric oscillator

3)Applications of ultrasonic waves

4)Complete electro-magnetic spectrum

4.a)Discuss "Nuclear fission as a source of energy".[Marks 4]

b)Define multiplication factor. How is this related with size of fissionable material.[Marks 5]

c)Express the energy released by 1 gram atom of U-235 in MeV.[Marks 4]

5.a)Describe the formation of bands in solids.[Marks 5]

b)What is superconductivity? What are the characteristics of superconductors?[Marks 5]

c)A critical field for niobium is 1*10^5 A/m at 8K and 2*10^5A/m at 0 K. Calculate the transition temperature of the element.[Marks 2]

6.Write notes on any two:[Marks 6*2=12]
a)Nuclear Fusion Reactor

b)Effect of temperature and concentration an shifting of Fermi level in P & N type semi-conductors.

c)Working of PNP transistor in CB configuration with energy band diagram.
