1. Write down one paragraph each of literary and non-literary prose. (You may take it down from a novel or
an article from a magazine or newspaper or any other source. However, do quote the source) 20

2. Fill in the blanks in the following sentences with suitable prepositions: 5

4. What do the words in italics in the following passages refer to? 5

i) Food is absolutely essential to keep us alive, and without it we should all very quickly die.
ii) ‘Hello Anu’ said I, ‘have you heard that IGNOU has come out with a fellowship scheme? Anu replied that
she had not. But it is true. I said, Prof. Jain who was here, well! He told me all about it.


5. Give the meanings of the phrasal verbs used in the following sentences. 5

i) She takes after her mother.
ii) Ring in the New Year.
iii) Don’t keep harping on like that.
iv) I tried to telephone you, but couldn’t get through.
v) The company has decided to wind up its business in Delhi.



6. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below:

My brother Runie had the largest, silkiest eyelashes any woman could dream of. My friends would sigh
enviously and say it was a criminal waste on a man. Finally, in a moment of complete disgust, he
signed the fringes of his eyelids with cigarette butts, but that didn’t make him any less handsome.

i) What is the passage about? 2
ii) Distinguish between ‘eyelashes’ and ‘eyelids’. 2
iii) The author is a woman. Why were her friends envious? 2
iv) What is the difference between ‘envious’ and ‘jealous’? 2
v) What does the word ‘would’ indicate in ‘would sigh’? 1
vi) What is meant by ‘criminal waste’? 1
vii) Explain the words: sigh, disgust, signed, fringes, butts 5

7. Rhetoric is often used now a days to refer to a discourse built up for or against a person, idea or
ideology. Keeping this in mind write 10 sentences on any of the above mentioned themes. You may use
literary devices as well. 20

8. Read the following poem and answer questions that follow:

Lamia

Do not all charms fly
At the mere touch of cold philosophy?
There was an awful rainbow once in heaven:
We know her woof, her texture; she is given
In the dull catalogue of common things,
Philosophy will clip an Angel’s wings,
Conquer all mysteries by rule and line,
Empty the haunted air and gnomed mine –
Unweave a rainbow, as it erewhile made
The tender-person’d Lamia melt into a shade.

i. Write in your own words what does the poet mean by ‘cold philosophy’? 5

ii. Describe the beauty of a rainbow and how has rainbow been stripped of all its charms. 5

iii. Lamia is the tantalizingly beautiful woman who vanished under the scrutiny of the philosopher
Apollonious. What Keats means is that the visionary beauty cannot stand the scrutiny of reason.
Elaborate further this statement. 8

iv. Use the following words in your own sentences in a figurative sense: 8

charms; texture; catalogue; haunted.
