2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University B.Tech Civil Engineering STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING DESIGN AND DRAWING-II(STEEL) (Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007) Question paper

Course: B.Tech Civil Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

SET 1
----------

Time: 3 hours Max Marks: [80]
Answer any ONE Question from PART-A
and any THREE Questions from PART-B
Note:Assume suitable data whenever necessary
Use of IS codes & Structural Tables is permitted
? ? ? ? ?

PART-A [Marks:32]
1. Design a Roof Truss for an Industrial Building proposed to be built in Bangalore
city. Particulars of the Building are Length = 120m, Width = 2mm, Roof Truss ?
Fink, Eaves height = 8m assume G.L Truss span = 24m, rise = 5m. Truss spacing
= 5m, Purlin spacing = 1.3m, Roof sheeting = Acc sheets.
Draw to scale:
(a) Elevation
(b) Details of Ridge Joint.
2. Design the stiffener at 3m from the end of a plate girder of 18m span. It carries a
dead load of 30 kN per meter run and a moving load of 60kN per meter run longer
than the span. The web is 180cm 1.2cm in section. Neglect impact.

PART-B [Marks:16x3=48]
3. A tie member consisting of two channels ISMC 200@22.1 kg/m back to back is
to be connected to gusset plate 12mm thick. Design the welded joint to develop
strength of tie, given that the overlap is limited to 350mm. Take permissible stress
in the weld equal to 0.44fy and permissible tensile stress in section equal to 0.6fy.
Where fy = 250 N/mm2.
4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. What is tension member? Explain various modes of failure of a compression mem-
ber.
6. What is compression member? Classify compression member based on slenderness
ratio of the column.
7. Design a gusseted base for a column consisting of IS 400× 82.2 kg/m with flange
300mm×14mm one on each flange. The column carries a load of 1900KN. The
column is supported on concrete pedestal with a bearing capacity of 4 N/mm2.
