Course: B.Tech Civil Engineering   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

SET2
-----------------

Time: 3 hours Max Marks: [80]

Answer any ONE Question from PART-A
and any THREE Questions from PART-B
Note:Assume suitable data whenever necessary
Use of IS codes & Structural Tables is permitted

? ? ? ? ?

PART-A [Marks:32]

1. Design a suitable truss for wind loads. Data: Spacing of trusses = 4m, Span = 18m. Assume the necessary data.

2. Explain :
(a) Shear buckling of web plate
(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.

PART-B [Marks:16x3=48]

3. Explain various types of fillet welds. Describe procedure for designing a fillet weld with relevant IS code provisions.
4. A hall of clear dimensions 15m × 6m is to be covered by RCC slab flooring 120mm thick over a RS joist spaced at an interval of 3m, center to center. Terrazzo finishing 20mm thick is provided over RCC slab. The live load on slab is 4kN/m2. The joists are resting over 300mm thick walls. Design the floor joists, if the permissible stresses in bending and shear are 165MPa and 100 MPa respectively. Unit weight of RCC finishing is 24 kN/m3.
5. What is tension member? Explain various modes of failure of a compression mem-ber.
6. What is a gusseted base? Explain various features of a gusset base with neat sketches. Describe procedure for designing a gusseted base. What are advantages compared with a slab base.
7. A steel stanchion consisting of ISHB 350 at 67.4kg/m carries an axial load of 400KN and a moment of 100KN-m in the plane of the web. Design the base of the column with attached base plate and initial tension bolts. The allowable bearing pressure on footing is 4N/mm2. The bolts may be given initial tension of 140 N/mm2
