It is the master key that unlocks all the difficulties of life. ‘Help yourself and heaven will help you’ is a maxim that receives daily confirmation. He who begins with crutches will generally end with crutches. Help from within always strengthens, but help from without invariably enfeebles the recipient. It is not in the sheltered garden, but in the rugged Alpine Cliff, where the storms beat most violently, that the toughest plants are reared. It is not by the use of corks, bladders and life–buoys that you can best learn to swim, but by plunging courageously into the waves and buffeting them. To wait until some charitable man passes by, to stand with arms folded, sighing for a helping hand, is not the part of any manly mind. The habit of depending upon others should be vigorously resisted, since it tends to weaken the intellectual faculties and paralyse the judgement. 11. Write an essay of 400 words on any ONE of the following. (15) (a) The position of women in Indian Society. (b) My favourite hero in history. 12. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below. (15) I have often heard people say how disappointed they will be if they never see a certain place which they have for years dreamed of visiting. I sometimes wonder whether, if we got all we dreamed of, we might not be even more disappointed than if we failed to get it. I, for example, longed for years to go to Rome. Yet when at last I arrived at the Eternal city and drove through its streets. I wondered whether it was worthwhile going so far to see a city which appeared to me to be so unworthy of its history. This disappointment, I may say, did not last, but famous cities, famous objects, famous views, do not always kindle at first sight the emotions we expect them to kindle. People used to think that a famous author was being funny when he said that he was disappointed with the Atlantic Ocean. To me this seems to be a straightforward confession of a disappointment that must have been experienced by thousands of people. The Atlantic Ocean, to my mind, looks its best from the shore; but even when it is seen from the shore for the first time by some one who has lived till manhood in an island district it does not always come upto expectations. Its very bigness is against it. It is easier to see at first sight the charm of a little lake nestling among the mountains, than to drink in the vast beauty of the Atlantic. In the same way I have never been disappointed in a hill, I have often been disappointed in a mountain. Although mountains are undoubtedly impressive, they have a kind of dreadful monotony that makes people like myself feel hostile to their beauty. (a) Why do people get disappointed? (b) What is the dream of the author? (c) Mention the name of the city that the author longed to visit. (d) Express his emotions at Rome. (e) Why does the author ignore the mountains? (f) Explain the meaning of the phrase ‘dreadful monotony’. (g) How does the author justify his liking for a lake? (h) Name the place which has never disappointed him. (i) How does the Atlantic Ocean disappoint him? (j) What is the straightforward confession of the author? 13. (a) Give a one word substitute for the following. (10) (i) Yearly return of a particular date. (ii) One who champions the cause of women. (iii) Place for keeping birds. (iv) Electronic calculating machine. (v) Extreme dry weather without rainfall. (vi) One who spends money extravagantly. (vii) Being all of one opinion. (viii) That can be easily carried about. (ix) That cannot be seen. (x) That cannot be heard. (b) Match the words in column A with their meanings in column B and rewrite. (10 x = 5) Column A Column B (i) Absurd (1) Esteem (ii) Confess (2) Poison (iii) Famous (3) Indistinct (iv) Prudent (4) Admit (v) Respect (5) Ridiculous (vi) Vague (6) Celebrated (vii) Venom (7) Discreet (viii) Error (8) Offspring (ix) King (9) Mistake (x) Progeny (10) Monarch. 14. Read each sentence to find out whether there is error in any underlined part. If any, write the alphabet of your choice next to the question number. If there is no error, then put E. (10 x 1 = 15) (a) They returned back on the appointed day. No error. A B C D E (b) I am sorry I did not know you have left A B C your coat here. No error. D E (c) I walked on as fastly as I could until I reached the A B C D road. No error. E (d) One of the biggest industrial houses in Maharashtra A B C are declaring a lock out. No error.
