1. (a) Explain why ramming obtained in sand slingers are more uniform over the
depth than that in sand squeezers or Jolting machine?
(b) Define the term pattern. Explain how patterns differ from the drawing of the castings. [8+8]
2. (a) What is investment casting ? What are the main materials used for making the investment pattern.
(b) With a neat sketch describe the complete procedure of investment casting process.
(c) What are the main advantages and disadvantages of investment casting. [4+8+4]
3. (a) Explain various types of risers with their advantages and limitations.
(b) Explain with neat sketches different types of ingates. [8+8]
4. What are the variables that affect the strength of a welded Joint? Explain them fully. [16]
5. Explain the braze welding process for the following with respect to filler metals, their composition, fluxes, Joint preparation.
(a) Braze welding of steels and cost Irons.
(b) Braze welding copper, Nickle and their alloys. [8+8]
6. (a) State two methods used for gas cutting bevels on plate edges in preparation for welding.
(b) What is meant by ‘oxygen lance cutting’? Give two examples of its use.
(c) Describe how cast Iron can be cut by the oxy-fuel gas cutting process.[2+8+6]
7. What do you mean by moulding of plastics? What are four basic molding methods?
With the help of a neat sketch explain the injection molding process. What are the advantages and limitations of the above process. [16]
8. (a) Explain briefly the basic steps in Powder Metallurgy process.
(b) What is powder metallurgy? What are its advantages and disadvantages. [8+8]
