2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University B.Tech Applied Electronics and Instrumentation LINEAR IC APPLICATIONS (Supplimentary Examinations, Aug/Sep 2007) Question paper
Set No 1 -------------------- Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks
1. (a) Discuss the differences between the differential amplifiers used in the first two stages of op - amp. (b) Compare and contrast an ideal op - amp and practical op - amp. (c) Draw an ideal voltage transfer curve of an op - amp. [8+5+3] 2. (a) Compare and contrast the performance of a BJT based op - amp and FET op - amp in detail. (b) Define the terms: Input bias current, input offset voltage, Gain Bandwidth product, output offset voltage and output offset current. [6+10] 3. (a) Design a differentiator to differentiate an input signal that varies in frequency from 10 Hz to about 1KHz. If a sine wave of 1V peak at 1000 Hz is applied to this differentiator draw the output waveforms. (b) Why active differentiator circuits are not used in analog computer to solve differential equations. [10+6] 4. (a) Explain the astable multivibbrator using operational amplifier. (b) Explain how an operational amplifier is used as a basic comparator. [8+8] 5. (a) Define the conditions on the feedback circuit of an amplifier to convert it in to an oscillator. (b) Design RC phase shift oscillator for 300 Hz frequency using IC µA 741 and ±15 V power supplies. Assume necessary component values. (c) Suggest a method to reduce the output voltage swing to ±6.5 Volts. [6+6+4] 6. (a) Give methods for obtaining symmetrical square wave using 555 timer. (b) Discuss any two applications of 555 timer in monostable mode. [8+8] 7. (a) Draw a schematic diagram of a D/A converter. Use resistance values whose rations are multiples of 2. Explain the operation of the converter. (b) Draw the block diagram of a converting 4-bit A/D converter and explain its operation. Sketch the output waveform. [8+8] 8. Explain the use IC 1496 as AM modulator with necessary circuit diagram. [16]
