Calculate the molecular weight of the polymer produced using 1 kg of ethylene and 3 kg of propylene giving a degree of polymerization of 5000. (b) The distance between the centers of the two adjacent carbon atoms in linear polymers is approximately 0.15nm. Calculate the length of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene chain that has a molecular weight of 1,000,000 gm/mole. [8+8]
6. (a) How much formaldehyde is required to completely crosslink 10kg of phenol to produce a thermosetting polymer. How much by product is evolved? (b) Describe the atomic structural arrangements of thermosetting plastics (c) Describe with the help of a neat sketch compression molding process for ther- mosetting plastics. What are its advantages and limitations. [6+5+5]
7. (a) What is Nylon? Discuss the various types of Nylons and their properties. (b) Suggest a suitable polymer along with its manufacturing process for Electric Iron handle. Justify your selection. [8+8]
8. (a) Explain the types of structure and molecular arrangement desired for producing synthetic rubbers. (b) What are the various additives added to raw rubber to get desired properties? Explain them. [8+8]
