( Common to Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering and Electronics &

1. (a) With the help of a neat sketch explain the principle and working of permanet-
magnet moving coil(PMMC)deflection mechanism. Derive the expression for
torque developed. [2+2+4+4]
(b) Explain about Ayrton shunt used in ammeters. [4]
2. Explain in detail the principle, working, and constructional details of current trans-
former and potential transformer. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain in detail the considerations in choosing an analog voltmeter.
(b) A coil with a resistance of 3
is connected to the terminals of the Q meter.
Resonance occurs at an oscillator frequency of 5 MHz and resonating capaci-
tance is 100 PF. Calculate the percentage of error introduced by the insertion
resistance Rsh = 0.1

4. (a) Name the measurements for which a vector voltmeter is used.
(b) Draw the block diagram of the vector volt meter, mention all the blocks.[6+10]
5. (a) With neat circuit diagram, explain the function of associated circuits that are
used for CRT operation.
(b) Explain how the light is emitted on the screen of a CRO. [10+6]
6. (a) Name different types of oscilloscopes. Compare their merits and demerits
along with their applications.
(b) How is vertical axis of an oscilloscope is deflected? How does this differ from
the horizontal axis? [8+8]
7. (a) Explain the term Capability of a ’phase lock’ connected with function gener-
ator.
(b) Explain briefly about various types of signal generators.
(c) What is the necessity to have TTL output on a signal generator and a fre-
quency counter? [4+8+4]
8. (a) Explain the basic principle and working of an electronic frequency counter.
Also explain how period can be measured.
(b) List the detailed specifications of electronic frequency counters. [10+6]
