B.E./B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION, Third Semester Civil Engineering CE 232 — BUILDING SCIENCE — II Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks) 1. State the factors which affect the orientation of buildings. 2. Write a brief note on sub soil drainage. 3. What are machine foundations? Sketch a typical sectional elevation. 4. What are Geo–Physical methods? 5. Sketch the sectional elevation of a Coursed Square Rubble wall and Flint Stone wall. 6. Sketch a Suspended Timber Ground Floor and mark the salient details. 7. Sketch the following roofs (a) Lean to roof (b) Collar–roof. 8. Write a brief note on Ramps and Escalators. 9. Enlist the methods adopted to protect the building from Termite attack. 10. What are Basic, Nominal and Actual dimensions in Prefabrications? PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks) 11. Sketch the following foundations and explain the method of construction. (i) R.C. column footing (ii) Jack Arch footing (iii) Steel Grillage foundation (iv) Raft foundation. 12. (a) Explain with sketches the timbering of trenches with respect to various types of soils marking the salient details and dimensions. Or (b) Explain with a neat sketch the method of constructing Cavity Walls and state their advantages and disadvantages. 13. (a) Sketch a typical Two Way Slab and Tee beam Floor slab system and explain their method of construction. Or (b) Describe with sketches the different types of flat slabs and state their limitations. 14. (a) A stair is to be located for an educational Institution in a stair room measuring 3.6 m ? 8.0 m. The vertical distance between the floor is 5 m. Geometrically design a Bifurcated stairs giving a dimensioned plan and elevation to a suitable scale. Or (b) Describe briefly the Round Trip time and Handling Capacity of a lift. Sketch the plan of the following lifts with suitable dimensions and capacity. (i) Passenger Lift (ii) Goods Lift (iii) Firemans Lift (iv) Hospital Lift. 15. (a) Explain with sketches the various techniques that are adopted to prevent dampness. Or (b) Illustrate with an example the Production Tolerance and Erection Tolerance in Prefabrication. Sketch the Isometric views of different Prefabricates. ———————
