ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY-II

Time:2 Hours
Maximum Marks:50

Instructions:
1)Attempt any two questions from each section.
2)Draw neat figures wherever necessary.


SECTION - I


1.a) Define an alloy, explain different types of alloy. [Marks 4]
b) Explain with suitable examples addition and condensation of polymerisation. [Marks 4]
c) Give the composition of atmosphere. Explain different zones of atmosphere. [Marks 4]

2.a) Explain different types of cement. Give composition of Portland Cement. [Marks 4]
b) What is Vulcanization of Rubber ? Give details. [Marks 4]
c) Explain importance and experimental determination of dissolved oxygen. [Marks 5]

3. Write short notes on (any three) : [Marks 12]
i) C is and trans variety of natural rubber.
ii) Green house effect.
iii) Different types of aerators.
iv) Duralumin & Alnico.
SECTION - II


4.a) Draw phase diagram for water system. Explain triple point. [Marks 4]
b) Explain experimental determination of calorific value of solid fuel by Bomb's calorimeter. [Marks 5]
c) Give the schematics and use of potentiometer. [Marks 4]

5.a) State and explain Beer's-Lambert's law. [Marks 4]
b) State and explain Gibb's phase rule. [Marks 5]
c) The following observations were made in Boele's gas calorimeter experiment : [Marks 4]
i) Volume of gas used = 0.1 m3 at STP
ii) Wt. of water heated= 25 kg.
iii) Initial temp. of water = 20o C
iv) Final temp of water = 33o C
v) Wt. of steam condensed = 0.025 kg.
Calculate the gross and net calorific value per cubic meter at STP of sample gas. Taken
latent heat of vaporization as 540 K. cal/Kg.

6. Write notes on ( any three) : [Marks 12]
a) Eutectic point and meta stable state.
b) Gas-liquid chromatography.
c) Glass Electrode.
d) Gross and net calorific value of a fuel.
