EI338 - ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTS

Answer all Questions
PART – A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Explain the term pH value.

2. How is moisture content in a solid material expressed?

3. What is the need for monitoring the content of carbon monoxide in air?

4. Mention the applications for smoke meter.

5. Define retention time.

6. How is resolution estimated in a chromatogram?

7. What are monochromators?

8. List the sources used in Atomic Absorption spectrometry.

9. What is dead time in a GM counter?

10. Sketch a typical NMR spectrum.

PART – B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)

11.i) List the types of electrodes used for pH measurement. Explain the construction details of one of them. Why is reference electrode required for pH measurement? (8)

ii) Describe a method of measuring dissolved oxygen content in the boiler feed water? (8)

12.a)i) Explain the use of thermal conductivity gauge for the analysis of flue gas. (8)

ii) Describe the construction details and working of a dust monitor. (8)

12.b)i) Explain the principle of operation of a paramagnetic oxygen analyzer with a neat sketch. (8)

ii) Describe the working of an analyzer that can be used to estimate the content of nitrogen oxide in a gas. (8)

13.a)i) Explain with a schematic diagram the various parts and their functions in gas chromatography. (10)

ii) On a particular 25cm long column of a chromatograph, benzene had retention time of 33min and a peak width of 15.1min. Calculate the number of theoretical plates in the column and height equivalent of a theoretical plate (HETP). (6)

13.b)i) Explain with sketches the operation of any two detectors used in gas chromatography.

ii) What is HPLC? Discuss its advantages and applications. (6)

14.a)i) Explain with a schematic diagram the operation of a double beam UV spectrometer. Mention its advantages over a single beam instrument. (10)

ii) The molar absorptivity of a compound in aqueous solution at 765nm is 1.54 x 103. The percentage transmittance of a solution in a cell with a 1cm path length is 43.2. Find the concentration of the solution. (6)

14.b)i) Describe the radiation sources and detectors used in IR spectrophotometers. (8)

ii) Explain the use of flame emission spectrometry for qualitative and quantitative analysis. (8)

15.a)i) Draw the schematic diagram of a mass spectrometer and explain its principle of operation. (8)

ii) Describe the working of proportional counter and scintillation counter. (8)

15.b)i) When does nuclear magnetic resonance occur? Explain the working of NMR spectrometer with a schematic diagram. (10)

ii) Write short notes on X ray spectroscopy. (6)
