Engineering Drawing - 1

Time : 180 minutes Marks : 100

Instructions for the students :

1. All questions are compulsory.
2. “Long Answer type Question (LAQ)” is a supply type question of 20 marks,
which require typical answer of about 60-80 lines in about 32-40 minutes.
3. “Short Answer type Question (SAQ)” is a supply type question of 5 marks,
which require typical answer of about 15-20 lines in about 08-10 minutes.
4. Use of non-programmable type of scientific calculator is allowed.
5. Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary.
6. Assume suitable data if necessary.


1. Explain the various type of scales used in engineering drawing
practice with proper explanatory sketch.

2. (a) The major and minor axes of an ellipse measure 100 mm
and 70 mm respectively. Draw an ellipse by the rectangle
method. (oblong method)
(b) A circle of 50 mm diameter rolls on circumference of another
circle of 150 mm diameter externally. Draw an epicycloid as
the locus of points on the circumference of a rolling circle for
one complete revolution.


3. Figure 1 shows the pictorial view of an object.
Draw I) Top view ii) Front view iii) Left hand side view

4 A pentagonal pyramid, side of base 25 mm and height 60 mm
has one of its slant (triangular) face on the H.P. and the edge of
base contained by that slant edge makes an angle 30 degree to
the V.P. Draw its projections.

Short Answer type Questions (SAQ’s)

Explain briefly single stroke letters and gothic letters.

6. Inscribe a circle in a regular pentagon of side 50 mm. Measure
the radius of a circle.

7. The front view of a 75 mm long line measures 55 mm. The line
is parallel to the H.P. and one of its end is in the V.P. and 25 mm
above the H.P. Draw the projections of line and determine its
inclination with V.P.

8. Explain the term ‘solids of revolution.’
