CH 243 — MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)
1. What is known as thermal shock resistance in materials?
2. Discuss briefly on pressure die casting and gravity die casting.
3. Distinguish between hypo eutectoid and hyper eutectoid steels. Give two examples.
4. Mention few applications of stainless steel in chemical industries.
5. ‘‘Purer tin can be obtained by electrolytic process’’, briefly discuss.
6. ‘‘Plasticizers and stabilizers are added to polymers’’, why?
7. Discuss certain ceramic forming techniques.
8. Mention industrially important types of corrosion.
9. What are the properties expected from refractories?
10. Discuss briefly the criteria to be stipulated in the selection of material for electrical cable making.
PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. Give an account of the mechanical properties expected from engineering materials and the factors that influence them. (16)
12. (a) (i) What is the purpose of alloying steels? Give the advantages and disadvantages. (3 + 5)
(ii) A stainless steel cannot be stained easily, why? Mention the three types of stainless steels and their properties and applications. (2 + 6)

(b) (i) What are the properties of lead? Give the uses and applications of lead. (3 + 5)
(ii) Explain the properties, uses and application of magnesium. (8)
13. (a) What are the characteristics of polymers? Distinguish between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Give examples. (4 + 8 + 4)
Or
(b) (i) Under what category abrasives are classified? (4)
(ii) Mention different abrasive material their applications and uses. (12)
14. (a) Distinguish between particulate, reinforced and Laminar type composites. Give examples uses and applications. (16)
Or
(b) Discuss on Asphalt concrete, RCC and Pre-stressed concrete. Also give their advantages and disadvantages. (16)
15. (a) Write short notes on : (4 ? 4 = 16)
(i) Allotropic modification of iron.
(ii) Meehanite metal.
(iii) Insulators.
(iv) Pultrusion process.
Or
(b) Write notes on : (4 ? 4 = 16)
(i) Hardenebility.
(ii) Lost wax process.
(iii) Galvanic corrosion.
(iv) Enamels.
