Course: B.E Electronic Instrumentation and Control   University: Anna University

B.E. DEGREE EXAMINATION,
Second Semester
Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering
ME 152 — MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
(Common to Instrumentation and Control Engg.)
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)
1. State and discuss briefly II Law of thermodynamics as enunciated by Clausius.
2. What is the difference between a SI engine and a CI engine?
3. How boilers are classified?
4. Distinguish between indicated horsepower and Brake horsepower of a steam engine.
5. Steam at 700 kN/m2 and 200?C enters an insulated convergent – divergent nozzle with a velocity of 60 m/s. It leaves the nozzle at a pressure of 140 kN/m2 and enthalpy of 2600 kJ/kg. Determine the velocity of the steam at exit.
6. What is known as pressure compounding with respect to a steam turbine?
7. Mention the two distinct advantages of Die–casting.
8. Bring out the differences between soft soldering and hard soldering.
9. In a shaper ‘‘the return stroke or the non cutting stroke is faster’’ Why? By which mechanisms this is accomplished?
10. Give two utilities from day–to–day usages in a household and identify the metal forming process by which they are made.
PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. (i) Define ‘available energy’ and ‘unavailable energy’.
(ii) Two kg. of H2 is cooled from 50? C to 20? C in a rigid vessel. Calculate the following : (1) Amount of heat removed (2) Change in internal energy
(3) Change in entropy. Assume ? = 1.4 for H2.
12. (a) With a neat sketch explain the salient features of a locomotive boiler.
Or
(b) ‘‘Irrespective of the increase or decrease in load a steam engine should run at constant speed’’. What should be done to maintain a constant speed and how it is done in practice?
13. (a) What is known as compounding of steam turbines? Explain with a sketch velocity compounding of steam turbines.
Or
(b) What are the different forms of nozzle? Explain why nozzles are made convergent–divergent.
14. (a) Explain the process by which cast iron pipes are made. Give neat sketches.
Or
(b) With neat sketches describe MIG and TIG welding processes.
