1. What are the properties of a good moulding sand?
2. Discuss the characteristics of metal powders.
3. Why is proper flushing so important in EDM?
4. For what type of work would you specify electrochemical grinding?
5. How do you specify a lathe?
6. How do you classify the milling machines?
7. State the main differences between shaper and planner.
8. What machining operations can be performed on vertical turret lathe?
9. What are the different methods of producing gears?
10. What is meant by super–finishing?
PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. What is gear shaping? Describe the mechanism with a suitable sketch.
12. (a) Briefly discuss the step by step procedure for CO2 moulding process.

(b) (i) Sketch and explain the submerged arc welding. (8)
(ii) Bring out the differences between TIG and MIG welding. (8)
13. (a) (i) Explain the principle of ECM with a neat sketch. (8)
(ii) Describe the LASER beam machining process and its merits. (8)

(b) (i) Explain the principle of ultrasonic machining process. (8)
(ii) What is plasma? Explain the principle of plasma machining. (8)
14. (a) (i) Explain the thread cutting operation performed in lathe. (7)
(ii) Explain the use of the following in a lathe : Face plate, Steady rest and Follower rest. (9)

(b) Draw neat sketch of a radial drilling machine and label its parts. What are the various operations performed in it?
15. (a) (i) What is a boring bar? Describe its utility. (6)
(ii) Describe the principle of quick return mechanism used in a shaper.
