PR 237 — MACHINE TOOLS AND CNC MACHINES
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)
1. Show the various working motions in machine tools with diagrams.
2. What are the general requirements of machine tool design?
3. What is Static and Dynamic stiffness?
4. What are the advantages of employing Anti–friction guideways?
5. Draw a schematic of a CNC machine tool and name its functional blocks.
6. What are the advantages of AC drives over DC drives for slide control in CNC machines?
7. What is cutter radius compensation?
8. What are the requirements in selection of tools for CNC machining?
9. What is NC post processing?
10. What is tool presetting?
PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. (i) Explain the basic design criteria in designing a typical machine tool
structure and derive the expression of optimum value with neat
diagrams. (8)
(ii) What is interpolation? Explain the various interpolation methods used for different CNC machine tool applications. (8)
12. (a) (i) Classify the various machine tools by different criteria. (4)
(ii) What are the various parameters defining working motions of
machine tools? (4)
(iii) Determine the rpm of a lathe spindle if a workpiece of diameter
100 mm is to be turned at a cutting speed of 88 m/min. Also find the
motor power rating for this operation if the tangential cutting force
is 3250 N. (8)

(b) (i) What are the various materials for machine tool structures?
Compare those materials on the basis of strength and stiffness
requirements. (8)
(ii) Explain the applications of various slideway profiles and their
combinations for different machine tools with neat diagrams. (8)
13. (a) (i) What are the various requirements in selecting a proper feed back
devices for CNC machines? Explain the constructional features and
applications of incremental encoders. (8)
(ii) Explain the following :
(1) Tool length offset (2) Linear motion guideways. (8)
Or
(b) (i) What are the various automatic material handling systems used in
CNC machines? Explain any two of them in detail. (8)
(ii) Explain the following :
(1) Peck drilling cycle (2) Tooling systems. (8)
14. (a) Write a CNC part program to machine the following from a bar of diameter 60 mm with a length of 120 mm.
All dimensions are in mm.
