B.E./B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION, Fourth Semester Production Engineering PR 239 – ENGINEERING METALLURGY Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks) 1. Define allotrophy. 2. Which properties in a Tensile Test indicate the ductility of a material? 3. Define Corrosion. 4. State Gibb’s condensed phase rule. 5. List the steps in specimen preparation for metallographic study. 6. Which cast iron is the starting material for production of malleable cast iron and by what treatment? 7. What are babbitts? 8. Name four principal methods of case hardening. 9. How does brazing differs from soldering? 10. What are the three stages of shrinkage and which one is compensated by pattern maker’s allowance? PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks) 11. (i) Draw a neat sketch of Iron–Iron carbide diagram and label the regions. (8) (ii) Discuss the phase reactions in it. (8) 12. (a) Enumerate the various methods for controlling corrosion. (16) Or (b) (i) What are the types of wear? Distinguish between them. (2 + 6) (ii) Explain Brinell hardness testing procedure. (8) 13. (a) Write short note on the composition, properties and application of the following : (4 ? 4) (i) Muntz metal (ii) Phosphor bronze (iii) Gray cast iron (iv) Martensitic stainless steel. Or (b) (i) Discuss the important factors in material selection. (8) (ii) Explain with an example, the two basic types of polymerisation reactions. (8) 14. (a) (i) Describe the Jominy end quench test. (8) (ii) Discuss the nitriding process. (8) Or (b) Discuss the heat treatment steps for a typical tool steel. (16) 15. (a) (i) Explain the significance of HAZ in welding. (8) (ii) What are the causes of residual stress in welding and suggest remedial measures? (8) Or (b) (i) Write a short essay on grain structure of a large ingot. (8) (ii) What are the types of segregation in casting? What are the causes and remedies? (8)
