2007 Anna University B.E Mechanical ME 237 — THERMAL ENGINEERING Question paper
B.E./B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION, Fourth Semester Mechanical Engineering ME 237 — THERMAL ENGINEERING Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL the questions. PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks) 1. Differentiate between fire tube and water tube boilers. 2. What is the purpose of a fusible plug? 3. Explain the need of compounding in steam turbines. 4. Define degree of reaction for a reaction turbine. 5. What do you mean by scavenging in I.C. Engines? 6. What is the purpose of a Thermostat in an engine cooling system? 7. Define Cetane number. 8. Differentiate between brake power and indicated power of an I.C. Engine. 9. Differentiate between a heat pump and a refrigerator. 10. Define RSHF. PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks) 11. The following data refer to a single stage impulse turbine : Isentropic nozzle enthalpy drop ¬– 200 kJ/kg Nozzle efficiency – 90% Nozzle angle – 25? Ratio of blade speed to whirl component of steam speed – 0.5 Blade velocity coefficient – 0.9 The velocity of steam entering the nozzle – 30 m/sec Find (i) the blade angles at the inlet and outlet if the steam enters the blade without shock and leaves the blade in the axial direction (ii) blade efficiency (iii) power developed (iv) axial thrust if the steam flow rate is 10 kg/sec. (16) 12. (a) (i) Describe with a neat sketch the working of Cochran boiler. Show the positions of different mountings and explain the functions of each. (10) (ii) Discuss the advantages of water tube boilers over fire tube boilers. (6) Or (b) (i) Explain why safety valves are needed in a boiler. Draw a neat sketch of spring loaded safety valve and explain its working. (8) (ii) What are the advantages of preheating the air? Draw a neat diagram of tubular air–preheater and explain its working. (8) 13. (a) (i) Draw the actual and theoretical p–v diagram of a four stroke diesel engine and explain why they differ each other. (8) (ii) Draw the typical port timing diagram of a two stroke SI engine and explain the salient points. (8) Or (b) (i) With a neat sketch explain the battery coil ignition system used in a SI engine. (8) (ii) List out the different parts of an IC engine that needs lubrication. With a sketch explain how this is achieved using a pressure lubrication system. (8) 14. (a) (i) Discuss the phenomenon of knocking and the various engine factors which affect it in a SI engine. (10) (ii) Discuss the need, effects and the methodology of supercharging. (6) Or (b) (i) Explain the various methods of finding the frictional power of an IC engine and discuss the relative merits. (8) (ii) Explain the significance and the methodology of heat balance test conducted on an IC engine. (8) 15. (a) (i) Draw a neat diagram of air conditioning system required in winter season. Explain the working of different components in the circuit. (10) (ii) Define comfort and explain how the comfort chart is constructed. Show the best summer and winter design conditions zones on comfort chart. (6) Or (b) Describe the working of summer air conditioning system suitable for hot and wet weather and for hot and dry weather with simple component diagrams.
