Note : Attempt Any five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Note : All questions are compulsory. All questions carry equal marks. 1. Write short notes on any four of the following : 4x5=20
(i) English as a second language (ii) Stylistic features of Indian English (iii) Turn-taking in conversation (iv) Cohesive Devices (v) Question tags (vi) Conversion as a process of creating new words
2. (a) What do you understand by Indianisation of English? Discuss briefly the two dimensions which led to the process of Indianisation of English. (10)
(b) What do you understand by negative sentences? Discuss any two types, giving at least four examples for each.
3. (a) What do you understand by the notion of the Cooperative Principle? Discuss the role of different maxims in discourse or in a conversation. (10)
(b) What do you understand by the term 'Coherence' ? Discuss the factors which bring about coherence in a text. (10)
4. (a) What is a diphthong? Explain with examples the vowel sounds which are used as diphthongs in English. (2+8=10)
(b) Identify the free and bound morphemes in the following words : (5) (i) displease (ii) colourful (iii) unbearable (iv) careless (v) bridges
(c) Identify the constituent parts of the following noun compounds : (5) (i) flowerpot (ii) walkover (iii) bookcase (iv) pickpocket (v) penholder
5, (a) Transcribe the following words using phonetic symbols (5) (i) bad (ii) clerk (iii) woman (iv) English (v) tough
(b) Rewrite the following sentencesa s a single sentence, combining them according to the directions given in brackets : (i) He is very old. He cannot run fast. (Use 'so ... that') (ii) Robert had prepared well. He failed. (Use 'but') (iii) We are sure of it. He is honest. (Use 'that') (iv) I have met her friend. The friend lives in Bombay. (Use 'who') (v) Tagore was a great poet. He was also a god painter. (Use 'not only but also')
(c) Some of the sentences given below have errors. Write the correct version of the incorrect sentences. Indicate which sentence/sentences is/are correct : (5) (i) I don't mind to wait a little (ii) Your daughter is twelve years old, isn't it ? (iii) She is living in this flat since 1995. (iv) I don't know why he acted in a silly manner. (v) Each of these students have done their work.
(d) Fill in the blanks in the following sentences with an appropriate phrasal verb from those given below (there are two, extra phrasal verbs). Make changes in the form of the verb, where necessary. (5) go off, go with, break into, run into, run down, look after, go for (i) The colour of the curtain __ the colour of the wall. (ii) The fireworks __ in the cascade of colour.
