2. (a) Discuss how English has become a widespread and powerful presence in India. Mention the domains in which English is widely used. 10

(b) Describe the stylistic features that characterise Indian English. 10

3. (a) What are the features of 'co - text' and 'the context of sifuation' ? How do they help us in analysing a text ? 10

(b) What is meant by 'feedback' and 'repair strategies' in the analysis of a conversation ? Explain with examples. 10

4. (a) Explain with examples the way new words are formed in a language throught he processes of prefixing and suffixing. 10

(b) Identify the free and bound morphemes in the following words : 5

(i) impatient

(ii) friendly

(iii) grammarian

(iv) unavoidable

(v) books

(c) Identify the constituent parts of the following noun compounds : 5

(i) showroom

(ii) sunshine

(iii) darkroom

(iv) outcast

(v) overdose

5. (a) Transcribe the following words using phonetic symbols : 5

(i) balm

(ii) pleasure

(iii) photograph

(iv) cough

(v) rough

(b) Rewrite the following sentences as a single sentence, combining them according to the directions given in brackets : 5

(i) Reena wanted to go abroad for M.B.A. Reena said to her friend. (use 'that')

(ii) I had never seen him before. I could recognise him because I had seen his photograph. (use 'though')

(iii) He is going to succeed. I'm sure of it. (use 'that')

(iv) She was very weak. She could hardly walk without support. (use 'so ... that')

(v) I have seen his friend. The friend lives in Paris. (use 'who')

(c) Some of the sentences given below have errors. Write the correct version of the incorrect sentences. Indicate which sentences are correct. 5

(i) I don't know why did he act so foolishly.

(ii) We should go home now and so you should.

(iii) There is a lot of work still left to be done

(iv) She avoided to see her boss.

(v) We are looking forward to see you

(d) Fill in the blanks in the following sentences with an appropriate phrasal verb from those given below (there are two extra phrasal verbs). Make changes in the form of the verb, where necessary. 5
