GE 202 - BASIC ENGINEERING
(Common to all branches)

Answer ALL questions.

Write the answers for each Section separately in the answer book.

SECTION I

(MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)

PART A - (4 X 2 = 8 marks)

1. What is the function of the fuel injector?
2. Enumerate any four characteristics of boiler.
3. What is a pattern?
4. List out the advantages of gas welding.

PART B - (2 X 16 = 32 marks)
5. (a) Compare the salient features of petrol engine and diesal engine.

Or

(b) With the aid of neat sketch, explain the working of Benson boiler.

6. (a) Explain the process of preparation of green sand mould with split pattern.

Or

(b) With a neat sketch explain various parts of lathe.


SECTION II

(CIVIL ENGINEERING)

PART A - (4 x 2 = 8 marks)

7. What is the standard size and weight of a brick as per IS code?
8. What are the compositions of cement?
9. Define shoulder of a road.
10. List out the factors affecting per capita consumption of water.

PART B - (2 X 16 = 32 marks)

11. (a) Explain the general properties of construction materials.

Or

(b) (i) Discuss briefly the causes of failure of foundation. (5)
(ii) Explain the process of plywood manufacturing. (5)
(iii) Brief the experimental method to determine the workability of concrete. (6)

12. (a) (i) Explain briefly super elevation and gradient. (4)
(ii) Determine the super elevation of horizontal curve, having radius of (4)
curvature 310 m.The average vehicle speed is about 60 Kmph.
(iii) Classify and explain bridges based on position of the bridge floor. (8)

Or

(b) With the aid of neat sketch, explain various components of a railway track.

SECTION III

(ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING)

PART A - (2 X 2 = 4 marks)

13. List out various circuit elements.
14. What is an ideal transformer?

PART B - (1 X 16 = 16 marks)

15. (a) A coil having a resistance of 6 ohm and an inductance of 0.03 H is
connected across a 100V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate the following in the
circuit.
(i) Current
(ii) phase angle between the current and voltage
(iii) power factor and
(iv) power.

Or

(b) With the aid of neat sketch, explain the construction ofDC generator.
Also deduce its emf equation.
