BNA24 : Ship Operations

Time: 2 hours

Note : All questions are compulsary. Use of calculators is allowed.

June 2007

1. A ship left port wtth drafts forward 8.2 m and aft 10 m. LBP 160 m, MCTC 220 tm, TPC 32 and centre of floatation 2.4m aft of midship. During the passage she consumed 42O tonnes of fuel oil frorn No. 4 D.B. (COG 35 m aft of midship), 220 tonnes of fuel oil from another DB tank (COG 60 m aft of midship), 200 tonnes of fresh water from fresh water tank (COG 60 m forward of midship). Find the arrival draft forward and aft. (7)

2. A ship of displacemcnt 16000 tonnes, KM 9.0 m, KG 8.0 m is listed 7degree to starboard. She works cargo as follows:
Loads 1500 tonnes cargo KG 4.5 m, 5.0 m to port Loads 1500 tonnes cargo KG 8.0 m, 4.5 m to starboard. Discharges l000 tonnes KG 6.5 m, 1.0m to starboard. Find how many tonnes of ballast must be transferred transversely to rnake the ship upright, if (P) and (S) tank centres are 10 m apart. (7)

3. Draw a side view of a General Cargo Ship showing lower holds, tween decks, peak tanks, DB tanks, engine room hatchways and position of bulkheads. (7)

OR

Illustrate double bottom structure of a transversely framed DB tank.

4. Describe with suitable sketch, typical mooring and anchoring arrangements on, forecastle deck also showing the leads of moorings. (7)

OR

Describe the information provided in General arrangement plan.

5.Describe angle of loll and explain the actions to be taken in case vessel is at angle of loll. (7)

OR

With the help of suitable sketch expain how the C.O.G. of liquid in a partly filled tank moves during rolling.

6. Write short notes on any two of the following : (7)
(a) MARPOL ANNEX II
(b) SOPEP
(c) IAMSAR

7 . Describe the criteria to discharge oil/water mixture from cargo spaces from an oil tanker as per MARPOL 73/78. (7)

OR

As per Malpol 73/78 Annex I write the names of special areas.

8. List any seven essential tasks to be carried out during Boat drill. (7)

9. Describe the procedure to be used while communicating on Walkie-talkie and VHF. (7)

10. Write short notes with sketches on any two of the following : (7)
(a) Reciprocating pump
(b) Globe and Gate valve
(c) Centrifugal pump
