Civil Engineering
AG 151 — ENGINEERING GEOLOGY
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)
1. Define Sea floor spreading.
2. Distinguish between confined aquifer and unconfined aquifer.
3. Write the symmetry elements of Gypsum.
4. Differentiate between syngenetic ore deposit and epigenetic ore deposit with example.
5. The metamorphic rock quartzite is formed from —————— of sedimentary rock by —————— metamorphism.
6. Match the following : (a) Porphyritic (i) Foliated structure (b) Ripple marks (ii) Texture of Igneous rock (c) Schist (iii) Monomineralic rock (d) Pyroxenite (iv) Sedimentary structure.
7. What are the types of Seismic methods and their uses?
8. Distinguish between open fold and closed fold.
9. What are the photo–recognition elements in photographic remote sensing?
10. Write a brief note on Littoral barriers.
PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. How do the rivers cause erosion, transporation and deposition? Give the erosional and depositional land forms made by rivers. Add a note on stream and drainage patterns. (2 + 1 + 5 + 3 + 5 = 16)
12. (a) (i) Define Symmetry elements and holohedral forms of a crystal. (3 + 2 = 5) (ii) Describe the axial characters, symmetry elements holohedral forms and type mineral of normal class of orthorhombic system. (1 + 1 + 7 + 1 = 11)
Or (b) Describe the following : (i) Felspar family of minerals. (8) (ii) Cavity filling deposits. (8) 13. (a) (i) How will you distinguish the three kinds of rocks? (2) (ii) Describe with neat sketches the chief intrusive forms of Igneous rocks. (2 + 5 + 7 = 14)
Or (b) Describe the structure, texture, mineral composition, engg. properties, occurrences and uses of the following rock types : (i) Gneiss (ii) Conglomerate (iii) Pegmatite (iv) Basalt. (4 ? 4 = 16)
14. (a) (i) How will you distinguish the joint from fault? (2) (ii) Describe with neat sketches the terminology and various types of faults. Add a note on their engineering importances. (4 + 8 + 2 = 14)
Or (b) What are the types of electrical survey methods? Describe briefly the methods of geophysical exploration for location of sulphide ore bodies. (1 + 5 + 10 = 16)
15. (a) (i) Give a brief note on Interpretation of satellite imagery data. (5) (ii) Describe briefly the different types of aerial–photography and its characteristics. (11) Or (b) What is a tunnel? Describe the various geological problems met during the construction of tunnels both in the hard rocks and in the soft grounds. (1 + 2 + 7 + 3 + 3 = 16) —————
