SET – 1

Section- A (Reading)[ 20 Marks]
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (8 marks)
It took about 3,oo,ooo years for early man to learn how to grow crops. This invention of
agriculture was the beginning of new civilization. As long as water was available there was no limit
to his territory. This knowledge made important changes in his life. He remained no longer a nomad
and rested with settled life. He began to tame some animals and created vast pastures for them to
feed. The dog looked after the ship. The sheep provided meat and skin for winter wear. Goats
provided milk. Oxen helped him in his agricultural work. He extended his domestic and social
activities. He constructed house for safety. Settled life led him to varieties of economic activities.
Twigs were used for making baskets. Covered with clay the baskets could be used for storing grain.
Forests provided the base for new economy. There was no desperate struggle against nature.
Humanity was evolving with a new direction. The discovery of wheel at this time made his new task
easier. Mixed with cattle power it helped him in extending economic activities to far off places.
Bazaars were created. They gradually became places of celebration and for exchanging goods.
Settled agriculture brought peace to humanity. (200words)

1.1. Answer the following questions briefly: (6 marks)
(a) How much time did it take for an early man to learn how to grow crops? (1)

(c) What was the most important change that took place in man’s life due to the invention of
agriculture? (1)
(d) Which animals did he tame and how did they help him? (2)
(e) How did the invention of wheel help him? (1)

1.2. Find words/phrases from the passage which means the same as the following: (2marks)

(ii) Extremely difficult or dangerous.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (6marks)
Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death worldwide. It is killing about 2200 people
in India everyday that means one every forty seconds. It is alarming that inspite of this; smoking is
increasing among the youth of India. According to World Bank study, India, Indonesia and China
are the only countries in the world where incidence of smoking is going up. It is increasing not only
in cities but also in towns and villages Higher education groups are also taking to smoking more
readily. Since smoking enjoys social acceptance, it is easy tjo get cigarettes. What starts as an
experiment, soon turns into a habit. It is difficult to give up smoking because unlike other drugs,
craving for it is immediate; Nicotine in cigarettes brings structural changes in brain. It nonavailability
can cause symptoms of agitation. Smoking also has a strong associational aspect. People
smoke while reading, after meals or with a cup of coffee. (158 words)

2.1 Answer the following questions briefly:
(a) How many people in India die in a day due to smoking? (1)
(b) Why is it easy to get cigarettes? (1)
(c) Why is it difficult to give up smoking? (1)
(d) What effect does nicotine produce on brain? (1)

3. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: (6marks)
The elephant, the larges living land animal on earth has interested man from time
immemorial. Its immense size, strength and intelligence has played a very important role in the
economy, culture and religion of the country where it is found. Over the past 40 millions years,
more than 600 species of elephants have roamed the earth. Changes in climate and vegetation
caused the extinction of many elephant species. The growth of human civilization also added to
their suffering. Today two spices are alive- the African elephant and the Asian elephant. They
not only inhabit different geographical regions, but also have distinct physical characteristics.
Asian elephants are smaller in size than the African elephants. They are more easily tamed than
their larger and wilder African counterparts. In fact humans have used the docile Asian elephants
over 5000 years as beast of burden, in warfare, and in ceremonial activities. (149 words)

Answer the following questions briefly: ( 5 marks )
(a) Name the species of elephants which have survived till today. (1)
(b) How is the African elephant different from the Asian elephant in physical
characteristics? (1)
(c) Which characteristic of the Asian elephant has led him to be tamed easily? (1)
(d) How has the Asian elephant been used by the human beings? (2)
Find the word from the passage which means the same as the follwing: (1)
(i) ‘very large / huge’


Section – B (Writing) 20Marks
4. You are Munish/Surekha, a resident of D-34, Rs Vihar, Dwarka, New Delhi. Open manholes
in your colony have become a source of danger for the pedestrians and vehicle owners. Write
a letter to the Municipal Commissioner complaining about this problem. Do not exceed 100
words.

OR
You are Vipul /umang of Lakshay Senior Sec. School, Mayur Vihar, Delhi, studying in class
X. Write an application to the Principal of your school requesting him/her to hold pre-board
tests. Do not exceed 100 words. (6 marks)

5. Read the passage given below: (8 marks)
The ball-point pen was invented by a Hungarian called Laszlo Biro. He was the man of many
talents. He was a journalist, painter, sculptor and hypnotist. As an editor it was his job to
select, correct and sometimes compose articles. This meant considerable paper work for
which he used a fountain pen. Sometimes it scratched the paper. Sometime it overflowed
leaving blobs of ink on the writing. He had to change the paper and rewrite again. All these
interruptions irritated Biro. He always dreamt of a pen without these flaws. He worked on it
and ultimately succeeded in designing a pen that answered his expectations.
Technically it was a superb discovery but its produ8ction was expensive. For sometime it
remained a fancy item. It soon caught the attention of air-force pilots who found it ideal for
high altitude since it did not depend on gravity and went on writing without having to be inkfilled
now and then. Gradually the pen became so famous that in the first market sale
organized in 1945 in New York, the entire stock of 10000 pens was sold out on the same day.
The people wanted to be the first owners to the miracle pen. (200words)

5.1 On the basis of your reading of the above passage, make notes on it in points only, using
headings and sub-headings. Also use recognizable abbreviations, wherever necessary. Supply
a suitable title to it. (4)

5.2 Write a summary of the above passage in about 50 words. (4)

6. A trade fair was organized in your city. You visited the faier along with your friend, Rishabh.
Write a paragraph in not more than 80 words describing the various pavilions visited by you
and the articles purchased. Aslo mention what interested you the most in the fair.

OR
You are Pulkit, a press reporter. You visited a park in Vikaspuri and found it in a mess. Using the
information given below, write a report in not more than 80 words for your newspaper.
As many cattle as the people- garbage dumped – slabs on the pathway chipped off at several
places-boundary wall crumbled – thorough fare for cyclist and scooterists- used for getting
relieved. (6marks)

Section – C (Grammar) 15 Marks

7. In the passage given below, one word has been omitted in each line. Write the missing word
along with the word that comes before and the word that comes after it in your answer sheet.
Ensure that the word that forms your answer is underlined as shown.

The accident had occurred at midnight, while Sudha and her mother were on their way to
Chennai for the pilgrimage-centre of Vayalur. Their bus collided head-on with another bus that
crashed into the driver’s seat killing him. Sudha was sitting two rows behind the driver with her
legs outstretched on the opposite seat. As a result, her feet got jammed. She was extricated from
the debris with great difficulty as her right leg had been fully trapped.
(a) How did the accident take place? (1)
(b) How was the driver killed? (1)
(c) How was Sudha sitting? (1)
(d) What had happened to her right leg? (1)
(e) Find the word in the passage which means ‘set free’. (1)

12. Read the extract given below and answer the questions that follow. Write the answers in your
answer sheets in one or two lines only. Remember to number the answers correctly. (5marks)
I think I wrote to you once that study of history should teach us how the world has slowly but
surely progressed, how the first simple animals gave place to more complicated and advanced
animals, how last of all came the master animal- Man, and how by force of his intellect he
triumphed over the others. Man’s growth from barbarism to civilizations supposed to be the
theme of history.
