B.E/B.Tech. DEGREE EXAMINATION, APRIL/MAY 2007 Annual Pattern-First Year Computer Science and Engineering EC 1X11-ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND CIRCIUTS
Answer all the questions: PART A-(10 X 2=20 marks)
1.Distinguish between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors. 2.A germanium diode draws 50mA with a forward bias of 0.27V. The junction is at room temperature of 27°C. Find the reverse saturation current of the diode. 3.What is quiescent point of a transistor amplifier? 4.Draw the small signal model of JFET. 5.Give the applications of astable and bistable multivibrators. 6.Mention the advantages of negative feedback. 7.Draw dark current of a photo diode. 8.Draw the Volt-Ampere characteristics of UJT. 9.State the advantages of monolithic ICs over discrete component circuits. 10.Define CMRR of an op-amp and write its expression.
PART B-(5 X 16=80 marks)
11.(a).(i).Draw and explain the Volt-Ampere characteristics of PN junction diode. (ii).Describe the application pf PN junction diode as rectifier and clipper. (Or) 11.(b).(i).Describe the conduction of current in an intrinsic semiconductor. (ii).Find the conductivity and resistivity of an intrinsic semiconductor at temperature of 300°K. It is given that ni=2.5 X 10^13/cm^3, µn=3800 cm^2/sV, q=1.6 X 10^-19C.
12.(a).(i).Draw the structure of a PNP transistor in CB configuration showing various current components. Define each component and obtain its small and Large signal current gain. (ii).Explain any one type of biasing of a transistor amplifier and derive its stability factor. (Or) 12.(b).(i)Describe the construction, principle of operation and characteristics of an N-channel depletion type of MOSFET. (ii).Compare depletion and enhancement type of MOSFETs.
13.(a).(i).Obtain the equivalent circuit of a single-stage CE transistor amplifier applicable at low frequencies. Derive its voltage and current gain. (ii).Draw the four types of topology for feedback of an amplifier. (Or) 13.(b).(i).Explain the operation of astable multivibrator. (ii).Draw and explain the circuit of Colpitts oscillator. Derive the frequency of oscillation and conditions for oscillation.
14.(a).(i).Describe the working of SCR with its characteristics. (ii).Describe the construction and operation of a solar cell. Give its applications. (Or) 14.(b).(i).Briefly discuss the use of LED and LCD as display devices in instrumentation. Comment on their relative merits and demerits. (ii).Diac is a bidirectional device. Explain.
15.(a).(i).Explain photolithographic process used in monolithic IC production. (ii).Show how an op-amp can be used as a voltage to current converter and integrator. (Or) 15.(b).(i).Draw an active low-pass filter circuit using op-amp and describe. (ii).Draw the monostable multivibrator circuit using IC 555 timer and obtain its frequency of oscillation.
