Paper VII - SOLID STATE PHYSICS - I
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer any FIVE questions
1. What is meant by a symmetry operations ? How do we classify them ? Discuss each class of
symmetry operations.
2. What are different Bravais lattices, point groups and space groups exists in two and three
dimensional crystal lattices ? Discuss them with neat diagram.
3. Derive dispersion relation one dimensional diatonic chart. Give the salient features of the
dispersion curve.
4. Define reststrahlen on band :
Obtain expression for reststrahlen frequency.
Arrive Lagrange?s equation of the crystal in the harmic approximation.
5. Obtain Planck?s distribution function for the radiation oscillators. Derive the phonon heat capacity
using Einstein model.
6. Show that the band gap is equal to twice the magnitude of the leading Fourier coefficient of the
crystal potential using the nearly free electron model.
