II B.Tech II Semester Supplimentary Examinations, Apr/May 2008 INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL SYSTEMS ( Common to Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering and Automobile Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks * * * * *
1. Explain the various physical principles involved in the operation of various cate- gories of inductive transducers. [16]
2. (a) List the different types of speed-measuring devices. Explain with neat sketches, the construction and working of any two of them. (b) Write short note on the Tachogenerators. [8+8]
3. (a) Explain the construction and working principle of liquid-in-glass thermometer. (b) With neat diagram explain the construction and working principle of vapour pressure thermometer. [4+12]
4. (a) Sketch the pirani-type thermal conductivity gauge, explain its operation. (b) Explain limitations and merits of pirani gauge. [16]
5. (a) List out the advantages and limitations of direct method of level measurement. (b) Describe with neat sketch the functioning of any two types of displacer type liquid level measuring instruments. [16]
6. (a) How relative humidity is measured using hygrometer? (b) A seismic type accelerometer is relatively rugged compared to a seismic type vibrometer. Comment. [16]
7. (a) Draw any four types of strain gauge arrangement for measuring strain. (b) How resistive strain gauges are calibrated? [8+8]
8. (a) A computer controlled fuel injection system that automatically adjusts the fuel-air mixture ratio could improve gas mileage and reduce unwanted polluting emissions significantly. Sketch a block diagram for such a system for an automobile and explain its working. (b) Explain with the help of a block diagram the working of the variable speed dc drive control system. State its characteristic and applications. [16]
