BLS-3 : LIBRARY CLASSIFICATION THEORY

Note : Answer all questions. All questions carry equal marks. Illustrate your answers with suitable examples and diagrams, wherever necessary. Write the relevant question number before writing the answer.

1.1 Define the following concepts with suitable examples :
(i) Attributes and Characteristics
(ii) Array and Chain
(iii) Discipline and Subject
OR
1.2 What are the different approaches adopted by users to find information in a library ? Discuss the role of library classification in meeting the subjeci approach towards information.

2.1 Differentiate between descriptive and dynamic theories of library classification. Describe the contribution of S.R Ranganathan towards the developmenot of dynamic theory of library classification.
OR
2.2 Define Common Isolates. Discuss the use of Common Isolates in UDC.

3.1 "Postulational approach is the base of an analytico-synthetic scheme of classification." Comment.
OR
3.2 Explain the concept of phase relation with appropriate examples from different schemes of library classification.

4.1 Describe in detail, the characteristic features of notation in C.C.
OR
4.2 Make a comparative siudy of the provisions in DDC edition 19 with those in DDC 20.

5.0 Write short notes on any three of the following (in about 300 words each) :
(a) Common auxiliaries
(b) Phase relation
(c) Depth schedules
(d) Current trends in library classification
(e) Fission
