Note : Attempt ony five of the following questions including Q. No. 1 which is compulsory. All questions carry equal marks. June 2007
1. Critically comment on one of the following passages with reference to their contexts : (20) (a) So sinks the day-star in the ocean bed, And yet anon repairs his drooping head, And tricks his beams, and with new-spangled ore, Flames in the forehead of the morning sky : So Lycidas sunk low, but mounted high, Through the dear might of him that walk'd the waves
OR
Shadwell alone, of all my sons, is he, Who stands confirmed in full stupidity, The rest to some faint meaning make pretence, But Shadwell never deviates into sense; Some beams of wit on other souls may fall, Strike through and make a lucid interval; But Shadwell's genuine night admits no rdV, His rising fogs prevail upon the day.
2. Defining the literary terms, Allegory and Satire, write a note on the allegorical and satiric character of "The Parliament of Fowls". (20)
3. Write a critical note on the "Amoretti" sonnets. (20)
4. Write a short essay on John Donne's imagery. (20)

Attempt a critical appreciation of "To His Coy Mistress".
5. Write a note on the religious and pastoral elements in "Lycidas" (20)
6. What is meant by the term, "mock-heroic" ? Discuss "MacFlecknoe" as a mock-heroic poem. (20)
7 . Attempt a critical appreciation of the poem, "The Tyger". (20)
8. Critically analyse the poem, "The Blessed Damozel" . (20)
OR
Write a critical appreciation of "The Waste Land".
