1. What are synthetic organic compounds? Discuss their effects on receiving streams.

2. The ultimate BOD for a waste is 350mg/l. For values of k1 equal to 0.23,0.345,0.46
and 0.690/d, plot the BOD curve as a function of time. Find the 5 day BOD in
each case. [16]
3. Describe the method to predict ground level concentration of a pollutant being
discharged from a stationary continuous source through a stack. [16]
4. (a) What are the types of control equipment used for the control of particulate
matter?
(b) Explain the mechanism for the removal of particulate matter using gravita-
tional settling? [8+8]
5. With a neat flow diagram explain the removal of sulfur from fuel oil using Hydro-de
sulphurization process. [16]
6. Describe briefly the sources of air pollution in a fertilizer plant. Make a list of
specific pollutants in the emissions from each source. [16]
7. Outline the design procedure for complete treatment of effluent from a fermentation
unit based on “ Activated sludge” process. Show the overall process flow diagram
of the system. [16]
8. (a) What type of pollutants can be removed in primary and tertiary treatment
process?
(b) Enlist advantages of reverse osmosis. [8+8]
