2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University B.Tech Biotechnology PROCESS ENGINEERING PRINCIPLES setno3 Question paper

Course: B.Tech Biotechnology   University: Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University

1. (a) How are biotech industries classified? Give few examples.
(b) State and explain the material balance equation for a given continuous distil-
lation unit. [8+8]
2. (a) Compare the ideal gas law and van der Waals? equation of state.
(b) van der Waals’ constants for chlorine gas are a = 6.493 lit2 atm / ( mole2 );
b = 0.05622 lit/mole. Calculate the pressure exerted by 50 lit of gas at 47 C.
Find the number of moles. [6+10]
3. (a) What is a compressible fluid?
(b) With the help of a line sketch describe a simple manometer.
(c) Show that in a simple inclined tube manometer :
 P = Ri (?A - ?B) sin ? Where P is the pressure difference; Ri is the level
difference of liquid in the manometer measured along the inclined tube ; ?A
and ?B are the densities of the manometric fluid and fluid flowing respectively
and ? is the angle of inclination of the tube to horizontal. [3+6+7]
4. (a) With the help of neat sketch explain Newton’s law of viscosity.
(b) Draw the plots of shear stress vs shear rate diagrams for Newtonian and Bing-
ham fluids explain the significance of the yield stress.
(c) A Newtonian fluid of µ = 0.7 cp is held between two infinite plates separated
by 0.03 cm. Calculate the shear stress on the stationary bottom plate when
the upper plate is moved with constant velocity of 30 cm per sec. [5+5+6]
5. Derive an expression for mass velocity for isentropic flow through nozzles. [16]
6. Explain Drag and drag coefficient giving all the relations and equations. [16]
7. (a) Explain the principle and working of the following:
i. Simple manometer
ii. Inclined manometer
(b) A U-tube manometer indicates a pressure drop of 25cm water across an air
filter. The air is at 260C and a guage pressure of 4105 N/m2. What is the
pressure drop (N/m2) and what is the percentage of error is introduced if the
density of the air in the manometer leads is neglected. [4+4+8]
8. (a) Give the differences between diaphragm pumps and peristaltic pumps.

(b) How positive displacement pumps work, explain? [6+10]
