2005 University of Mumbai(Bombay) Applied science-1 University Question paper
APPLIED SCIENCE -I (JAN. 2005) 1. (a) Explain how a charged particle fired into uniform electric field describes parabolic motions. (5) (b) Define lattice parameter and explain how it is related with molecular weight and density in a single crystal. (5) 2. (a) Velocity of ultrasound waves in mild steel is 5.9 x 103 m/sec. The velocity ultrasound waves in brass measured by an ultrasound gauge meter, calibrated for mild steel is 4.8 x 103 m/sec. If thickness of brass plate measured by the ultrasound gauge meter is 12.8 cm. What is the real thickness ? (5) (b) What is the De-Broglie wavelength of an electron which has been accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 300 volts ? (5) 3.(a) A water drop is charged by an electron and placed in electric field. What is the intensity of electric field required to keep the charged drop stationary if radius of drop is 10-7 m and density of water is 103kg/m3? (5) (b) Explain wave particle duality and De-Broglie's Hypothesis. (5) 4.(a) Write short note on formation of potential barrier at p-n junction. (5) (b) Calculate density of Ga As using following data: (5) Atomic weight of Ga: 69 ; Atomic weight of As: 74 Lattice constant for Ga As = 5.6 x 10-8 cm ; Number of atoms per unit cell in GaAs = 4. 5. (a) Compare De-Broglie wavelength associated with following particles: i) Mass of 60 micrograms traveling with velocity of 80 m/s. ii) Mass of 8 x 10-27 kg and traveling with velocity of 13x10-4 km/sec. (5) (b) Explain with neat diagrams, electrostatic or magnetostatic focusing of an electron beam in C.R.T. (5) 6. (a) Explain the following: (5) i) Acceptor impurity. iv) Extrinsic Semiconductor, ii) Donor impurity. v) Fermi level, iii) Intrinsic semiconductor. (b) Explain procedure to determine Miller Indices of Crystal plane which intercepts all the three axes. (5) 7. (a) An electric potential difference of 150 V is used to accelerated an electron beam. This beam is made to pass through uniform electric field established perpendicular to its path by a set of rectangular plates of length 10 cm. The distance between the plates is 1 cm. and potential difference between them is 15 V. Determine the angle of deflection of the electron beam. (5) (b) Silver has FCC structure and it's atomic radius is 1.44 °A. Find the spacing of the (220), (200) and (111) planes. (5) Section II 1. Attempt any five of the following: (10) (a) Find out the temporary and permanent hardness in a sample of water with following impurities : Mg CO3 = 29.2 ppm, MgSO4 = 36.0 ppm, CaCL2 = 22.2 ppm, MgCl2=142.5ppm. (b) What is degree of hardness in water? How is it expressed ? (c) What is polymerization ? What are the condition for polymerization ? (d) What is neutralization number ? How is it helpful in accessing the quality of lubricant ? (e) Define the terms: (a) Pollution (b) Pollutant. (£) What are elastomers ? Mention few drawbacks of natural rubber. 2. (a) Explain the theory of Lime-Soda process with special reference to the different functions of lime and soda. (6) (b) With the help of a suitable example explain condensation. Polymerization. Name any two-thermosetting resins prepared by using condensation Polymerization. (4)
