Answer All Questions Part – A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks) 1. Define Hooke’s law. 2. Define Poisson’s ratio? 3. Describe the classification of force system 4. State varignon’s theorem of moments 5. What are the sign conventions used for shear force and bending moment in general? 6. What is mean by point of contraflexure? 7. State D’Alembert’s principle. 8. Define Angle of repose. 9. Define kinematic chain. 10. Differentiate between open and closed coiled helical springs.
Part – B (5 x 12 = 60 Marks) 11. (a). A steel rod 3 cm diameter and 5 m long is connected to two grips and the rod is maintained at a temperature of 95ºC. Determine the stress and pull exerted when the temperature falls to 30ºC. If (i) the ends do not yield, and (ii) the ends yield by 0.12 cm. Take E= 2 X 105 MN/m2 and a = 12 X 10-6 / ºC. (Or) (b). A member ABCD is subjected to point loads P1, P2, P3 and P4 as shown in figure.

Calculate the force P2 necessary for equilibrium, if P1 = 45kN, P3= 450kN and P4=130kN. Determine the total elongation of the member, assuming the modulus of elasticity to be 2.1 X 105 N/mm2. 12. (a). Find the resultant of the system of forces shown in figures

13. (a). A cantilever length of 5m carries UDL of 2 KN/m lengths over the whole length and a point load of 4 KN at the free end. Draw the S.F and B.M diagram for the cantilever.
(Or) (b). Determine the force in all the members of the following truss.
14.(a). A 6m long ladder weighing 180N is placed at 60º to the ground and is resisting a vertical wall. The man weight 700N. The co-efficient of friction between the ladder and ground is 0.4 and that between the ladder and the wall is 0.25. How for the man can clime so that the ladder does not slip? (Or) (b). Two blocks of weight 120N and 60N are placed two inclined planes of inclinations 60º and 30º are connected by a string as shown in figure. Find the acceleration of each block and tension in the string. Take co-efficient of friction between the blocks and plane as 0.3. Also determine the velocity of the system in 6 seconds after starting from rest.

15. (a). Explain the terminology used in spur gear (Or) (b). A closely coiled helical spring is to carry a load of 10 Kg and the mean coil diameter is to be 8 times that of the wire diameter. Calculate these diameters, if the maximum stress is to be 1Tonne/m2.
