2005 Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) B.Tech Civil Engineering repair and maintanance on buildings Question paper
Note : Answer any five questions. All questions carry equal marks. Use of calculator is allowed.
1. (a) ln a low cost housing project, doors and windows of locally available timber were used. They were all battened and braced. After some time the battens were observed to have warped and gaps developed. Shutters could not be properly closed. What remedial measures will you take ? (7)
(b) Why are timbers subjected to seasoning ? (7)
2. What are the various types of coalings and protective layers applied to iron/steel surfaces ? Describe briefly each one of them. What are their advantages ? (14)
3. What are the various non-destructive testing methods (NDT) for determining the physical condition of cement concrete structures ? Mention the flaws or defects which are determined in each case. (14)
4. Explain briefly the difference between the following : (4x3.5)
(a) Wrench and Spanner (tool)
(b) Cracking and Spalling (of concrete)
(c) Terrazzo and Plain concrete (flooring)
(d) Shakes and Knots (in timber)
5. What is a water supply plumbing system ? What are the common defects encountered in such a system and how are they rectified ? (14)
6. What are the various types of defects developing in a brick masonry wall ? How will you diagnose them (visually or by instruments) ? Describe briefly the methods of their repair, if any. (14)
7. What is water-proofing ? What are the various materials used in water proofing of building structures ? (14)
8. Write short notes on the following : (4x3.5)
(a) Expansion Joints
(b) Cobble-stone flooring
(c) Epoxy grouts, mortars and coating
(d) Efflorescence
