1. Explain with chemical equations the formation of photochemical smog in the atmosphere. [16] 2. A stream with an average depth 2.0m and velocity 0.22m/s, has an initial dissolved oxygen concentration 4.2mg/l @150c at a point A. What is the initial dissolved oxygen deficit? What is the value of reoxygenaiton constant at 200c? [16] 3. (a) A thermal power plant burns 100 tonnes of coal with 5.5% sulphur content. Calculate minimum stack height required. The particulate concentration in flue gases is 8000 mg/m3 and the gas flow rate is 20 m3/sec. (b) Find stoichiometric air fuel ratio for combustion of methane. If it is to be burnt in 150% stoichiometric air, write the equation and find Air fuel ratio? [8+8] 4. (a) What are cyclones? Under which conditions cyclones are used i. in series and ii. in parallel? (b) What possible effects, the following parametric changes may have on the cyclone collection efficiency? i. Increase in inlet dust concentration, ii. Increase in inlet velocity, iii. Increase in inlet area / cylinder area and iv. Larger diameter and penetration of the vortex finder? [8+8] 5. With a neat flow diagram explain the removal of sulfur from fuel oil using Hydro-de sulphurization process. [16] 6. Explain the basic objectives and aims of sewage treatment. [16] 7. Differentiate the suspended growth process and attached growth process with examples for wastewater treatment. [16] 8. (a) Enlist important objectives of tertiary treatment methods for pollution control. (b) Enlist various steps involved in tertiary treatment and discuss in brief. [8+8]
