Answer any FIVE Questions

1. Explain Davidon-Fletcher -Powell method with the help of flow chart. [16]
2. (a) Derive the output equation for the armature design of a DC machine & Explain
how values of “D” & “L” are determined.
(b) Explain how Commutator & brushes of a DC machine are designed? [8+8]
3. Explain the important variables involved in design of a Core Type Power Transformer
& Indicate their permissible values .How they affect the optimal design?
[16]
4. (a) Compare design aspects for Shell type Power & Distribution Transformers.
(b) What is meant by Stepped core in a transformer? Describe available choices
with help of sketches. [8+8]
5. How do you formulate design equations of 3-Ph Salient-pole Alternator? Illustrate
with an example. [16]
6. Draw the developed diagram of the stator winding of a 3-ph, 4 pole, Alternator
The winding is of Lap type, with double layer,with a phase spread of 600. The
winding is short pitched by one slot. Assume Slots/pole/phase=3. [16]
7. (a) What is meant by Specific Magnetic & Electrical loadings applicable to 3-Ph
Induction-Motors. What are the advantages & disadvantages if higher or lower
values are used?
(b) Discuss about various shapes of Stator slots in a 3-Ph Induction-Motor. [8+8]
8. (a) Write the equations for Rotor current in a Slip-ring rotor of a 3-Ph Induction-
Motor. Write a computer program in “C” for Calculation of the same.
(b) Write the equation for number of turns/phase in the wound rotor of 3-Ph
Induction-Motor? Write a computer program in “C” for Calculation of the
same. [8+8]
