CY1X01 – ENGINEERING CHEMISTRY

TIME: 3 HRS Max. Marks: 100

PART – A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1. What are refractoriness? How are they classified? Give examples for each type.
2. What are epoxy resin adhesives state their uses?
3. What is condensed phase rule for two component alloy system?
4. Define the terms adsorbent and adsorbate. Give suitable examples.
5. Define a reference electrode. Give one example.
6. How may an oil paint rendered luminous?
7. What is a primary battery? Give an example.
8. What is meant by Reverse osmosis? How is it applied in the desalination of water?
9. Give the composition and uses of producer gas.
10. State Beer-lamberts law.


PART – B (5 X 16 = 80 Marks)

11(a) (I). What are garnets and carborundum? Give the properties of Boron Carbide.
(II). Discuss the important properties Refractoriness, Porosity and Thermal spalling of refractories.

(b)(I). Outline the classification of adhesives with suitable examples.
(II). Describe injection moulding of plastics with a neat diagram.


12(a) (I). Discuss in detail the application of phase rule to lead-silver system.
(II). Name each one non-ferrous alloy of copper, nickel, Alumminium and lead. Give their composition and uses.

(b)(I). Deduce Langmuir adsorption isotherm.
(II). Write an account of adsorption chromatography.


13(a) (I). Derive Nernst equation and mention its application.
(II). Discuss the mechanism of chemical and electrochemical corrosion.

(b)(I). How do you control corrosion by proper designing and selection of materials.
(II). what are paints? What are the various constituents of paints? Giver their functions with examples.


14(a) (I). Explain softening of water by in exchange method.
(II). With a neat sketch explain the functioning of a nuclear reactor.

(b)(I). Write a brief note on lead acid storage cell.
(II). Explain phosphate conditioning & sedimentation with coagulation.


15(a) (I). How synthetic petrol is obtained by fisher Tropsch method?
(II). How the gas analysis is carried out? Explain with neat diagram.

(b)(I). Explain briefly colorimetry with neat diagram.
(II). Write the estimation of chromium using atomic absorption spectroscopy.
