PART ‘A’

Q. 1. (a) Describe an experiment for which classical mechanics is inadequate to explain the results. 4
(b) Explain ‘Duality Concept’ in physics and obtain and expression for the de Broglie wavelength for an accelerated electron.

Q. 2. (a) State Heisenberg uncertainty principle and explain how results of the experiment of diffraction of electron beam by a slit can be used to describe the significance of the principle.

(b) Using the uncertainty principle, show that an electron cannot exist inside a nucleus but can exist in an atom.

Q. 3. Establish time independent Schrodinger wave equation and use it to obtain an expression for kinetic energy of a particle restricted to move between x = 0 and x = L.


Q. 4. Derive Planck’s law of radiation and explain, how Wien’s displacement law can be deduced from it ?


PART ‘B’

Q. 5. (a) Draw a block diagram for a regulated power-supply and describe briefly the role of each ‘block’ in converting a.c. to a regulated d.c. 4
(b) Explain the concepts of ‘ ripple’ in half-wave rectifier and derive an expression for its ripple factor.


Q. 6. Derive an expression for Barkhausen condition for self-sustained oscillations and use it to obtain an expression for the frequency of oscillation for Hartley oscillator.


Q, 7. (a) Derive an equation for frequency-modulated wave in terms of the deviation ratio 8.
(b) Describe the reactance tube modulator and explain how it produces frequency modulated waves.

Q. 8, Write short notes on any two of the following :
(i) R-C coupled amplifier;
(ii) CRO;
(iii) Balanced modulator;
