1. (a) Why multiple extraction is more ecient than the single extraction.
(b) The solubility of a substance is twice as great in ether as in water. Compare
the quantities extracted from 100cc of aqueous solution by:
i. 100cc of ether in single operation.
ii. 50cc if ether in two successive operation.

2. (a) Explain the classification of Chromatography.
(b) Write a short note on:
i. Anion exchanger
ii. Cation exchanger

3. (a) Discuss critically how activities are determined using vapor pressure method.
(b) Explain why the apparent molecular weights of p-cresol in benzene and ni-
trobenzene in benzene increase with increasing concentration.
(c) Derive expressions for determining actual molecular weight in the above situ-
ations.

4. (a) Derive relation between osmotic pressure and vapor pressure.
(b) Obtain a relation between depression of freezing point and molality of the
solution.

5. (a) What is meant by Quantum Eciency of a photochemical reaction?

6. (a) State Kohlrausch’s law of independent migration of ions?
(b) Calculate the equivalent conductivity at infinite dilution for chloroacetic from
the following data. Equivalent conductivities at infinite dilution for HCl, NaCl
and Cl.CH2.COONa are 426, 126 and 90 ohms respectively?

(b) The density of acetone is 0.791 at 20 oC. Calculate the surface tension of
acetone, given that the parachor values of C, H, O and double bonds are 7.21,
16.2, 20.0 and 23.2, respectively.

8. (a) Explain why 0.01M aluminum chloride solution in water have lower vapor
pressure than 0.02M sucrose solution.
(b) Describe the experimental method for determining the vapor pressure of a
