DISTANCE EDUCATION P.G.D.D.I. EXAMINATION, DECEMBER 2007. First Semester BASIC CONCEPTS OF INSTRUMENTATIONS (1997 onwards) Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks PART A — (5 ? 8 = 40 marks) Answer any FIVE questions. 1. Explain the terms accuracy, precision, sensitivity and resolution. 2. A voltmeter with a sensitivity of 1000 /V reads 100 V on its full scale value of 150 V, when connected across an unknown resistance in series with a milliammeter of negligible resistance. When the milliammeter reads 5 mA, calculate the resistance value and the loading effect of the voltmeter. 3. What are gross errors? Discuss the ways to reduce or eliminate these errors. 4. State the principle of a tape recorder. 5. Describe the measurement a non-electrical quantity with the help of a transducer. 6. What is meant by order of a system and what does it signify? Give examples for zero and I order systems. 7. Explain the construction of an analog voltmeter. 8. Explain the operation of an X-Y recorder with a neat diagram. PART B — (4 ?15 = 60 marks) Answer any FOUR questions. 9. Discuss the three major classification of errors and suggest ways to minimize them. 10. Analyse the performance of a first order system when subjected to the usual testing inputs. 11. Mention the nature of problems faced while measuring the flow rate of fluids. Describe one of the commonly used methods of flow measurement. 12. Explain the principle and function of a digital recorder. Mention its merits and demerits. 13. Describe the refractive index profile of step-index and graded-index fibers. Explain the optical transmission through these fibers. 14. Outline the various stages of an oscilloscope. Explain how the electron beam is focussed to a fine spot on the screen. ————————
