1. (a) Discuss the principles of electro gravimetry and procedure adopted for the
analysis by electro gravimetry.
(b) Discuss the mechanism of electrolysis.
(c) Explain what is meant by limiting diffusion current density. [5+6+5]
2. (a) Show the basic Potentiometric circuit and explain how Electrode potentials
are measured.
(b) For a cell reaction Zn + cu2+ = Zn2+ + cu , the Gibb’s free Energy change is
found to be -50> 40 cal g mm-1. Calculate the EMF generated by the cell.
(Faradays constant: 96950) [8+8]
3. (a) Draw the potentiostatic anodic polarization curve of any metal in acid solution.
(b) Explain the phenomenon of concentration polarization considering the hydro-
gen evolution reaction. [7+9]
4. (a) Explain the various methods adopted for finding out the thickness of deposits.
(b) Discuss the effect of current density on the deposition characteristics. [8+8]
5. (a) Explain the differences between dry corrosion and wet corrosion.
(b) What is Hydrogen over potential? What is it’s effect upon the rate of corro-
sion? Explain. [8+8]
6. (a) Write a note on selection of materials for corrosion service.
(b) A sheet of stainless steel is welded in to a circular duct. After some time
rust appeared along a band extending about 0.5 inch on each side of the weld.
Why has this happened? Do you think you could have avoided this happening?
What must be the corbon content of the stee(> 0.03 % c). [8+8]
7. (a) what are the different methods of cathodic protection? Explain them.
(b) List some of the most important applications of anodic protection and explain
them. [8+8]
8. (a) Explain the various inferences that can be made from a galvanic series and
explain them in detail with suitable examples.
(b) Define the term fatigue. Explain the various types of stress cycles. [8+8]
