Part A (10 x 2 = 20 marks)

1. How will you identify between ABS and PS by simple methods?
2. What is melt flow index? How is it useful?
3. Define Scorch? How is it useful to a processor?
4. What is the significance of determining epoxy equivalent?
5. How viscosity average molecular weight is determined?
6. What is the principle behind osmometric method of molecular weight measurement?
7. What is oxidation induction time? What methods are used to measure the same?
8. What properties can be evaluated from thermograviometric analysis?
9. In what way X-ray diffraction methods are useful for polymer characterization?
10. How FTIR analysis is useful for polymer identification?

Part B (16 x 5 = 80 marks)

11.i) Define gel time and peak exothermic temperature.

ii) How are they useful during fabrication?

iii) Describe a suitable method with experimental details a Method of measuring the gel time and peak exothermic Temperature of a polyester resin.

12.a)i) Define plasticity and plasticity retention index.

ii) How are they useful?

iii) Explain with a neat diagram and process details, how plasticity and plasticity retention index (PRI) are determined.

12.b)i) Define acid value and hydroxyl value?

ii) What are their significance?

iii) Describe an experimental method by which acid value of a polyester resin is determined.

13.a)i) What methods are available for determining the number average molecular weight of a polymer?
ii) Choosing any suitable method write down the procedure of determining the number average molecular weight with the sketch of the apparatus.

13.b)i) What do you understand by molecular weight distribution?

ii) What are the advantages and disadvantages of narrow and broad molecular weight distribution?

iii) Describe the determination of MWD by Gel Permeation Chromatography.

14.a)i) What is the difference between DTA and DSC?

ii) With the neat sketch explain how the analysis of a polymers is done with a DSC, giving a typical thermogram.

14.b)i) What is the principle behind TGA?

ii) With a neat apparatus sketch, explain how the oxidative stability of polymers are determined by TGA.

15.a)i) Explain the principle of FTIR analysis.

ii) Describe the method by which FTIR experiment is carried out to characterize the polymers.

15.b)i) Distinguish between TEM and SEM.

ii) Describe the method of studying the morphological properties of polymeric materials using SEM.
