PART A (10 X 2 =20)

1.What is specific weight and specific gravity of a fluid?

2.Write the relation between absolute pressure and gauge pressure.

3.Define continuity equation and what is the principle behind it?

4.Differentiate between laminar and turbulent flow.

5.Draw the hydraulic grade line and total energy line

6.List the types of flow measuring devices fitted in a pipe flow, which uses the principle of bernoulli’s theorem

7.Define Reynolds number and Mach number.

8.What are the types of similarities?

9. What ia run way speed and specific speed in turbines?

10. What is positive displacement pump and roto dynamic pump?

PART B (5 X 16 =80)

11.(i) What is distorted model and alos give suitable example ?

(ii) Find the discharge through a weor model by knowing the discharge over the actual (Proto type) weir is measured as 1.5 m^ 3/s.The horizontal dimensions of the proto type and the vertical dimentions of the model =1/10 of the vertical dimension of the proto type.(Hint : Apply Froude model law)

12 (a) (i) A rectangular plate of size 25 cm X 50 cm and weighing 245.3 N slides down a 30 degrees inclined surface at uniform velocity of 2m/s.If the uniform 2mm gap between the plate and the inclined surface is filed with oil determine the viscosity of the oil.

(ii) Determine the minimum size of glass tubing that can be used to measure water level .If the capillary rise in the tube is not to exceed 2.5 mm.Assume surface tension of water in contact with air as 0.0746 N/m

OR

(b) At a depth of 2 Km is the ocean the pressure is 82404 kN/m 2 .Assume the specific weight at a surface as 10055N/m 3 and htat the average bulk modulas of elasticity is 2.354 X 10 9 N/m2 for the pressure range.Dtermine the change in specific volume between that at surface and 3km depth and also determine the specific weight at that depth?
13 (a) Derive from the basic principle the Euler’s Equation of motion in Cartesian co-ordinate system and deduce the equation to bernoulli’s theorem for steady irrotational flow.

Or

(b) A venturimeter is inclined at 60? to the vertical and its 150 mm diameter throat is 1.2 m from the entrance along its length. It is fitted to a pipe of diameter 300 mm diameter pipe.the pipe conveys gasoline of specific gravity 0.82 and flowing 0.215 m3/s upwards.pressure gauge inserted at entrance and throat show the pressures of 0.142 N/mm 2 and 0.77 N/mm2 respectively.Dtermine the coefficient of discharge of he venturimeter. Also dtermin the reading in mm of differential mercury column ,if instead of pressure gauges the entrance and the throat of venture meter are connected to the limbs are connected to the limbs of a U tube mercury manometer.

14 (a) A compound pipeing system consists of 1800 m of 0.5 m ,1200 m of 0.40 m and 600 m of 0.3 m new cast iron pipes connected in series.Convert the system to

(i)An equivalent length of 0.4 m diameter pipe and

(ii)An equivalent six\ze of pipe of 3600 m length?

OR

(b) (i) What is the boundry layer and write its type of thickness?

(ii)A smooth two dimentional flat plate is expected to a wind velocity of 100 Km/hr.If laminar boundry layer exists upto a value of Rex equal to 3X 10 5 , find the maximum distance upto which laminar boundry layer exists , and find its maximum thickness.Assume kinematic vicisity of air as 1.49 X 10 -5 m2 /s

15 (a) (i) What is he function of draft tube in francis turbine?

(ii)The velocity of whirl at inlet to the runner of n inward flow reaction turbine is 3.15 ?H m/s and the velocity of flow at inlet is 1.05 ?H m/s .The velocity of whirl at exist is 0.22 ?H m/s in the same direction as a inlet and the velocity of flow at exist is 0.83?H m/s ,where H is head od water 30 m.The inner diameter of the runner is 0.6 times the outer diameter.Assuming hydraulic efficiency of 80 %.Compute angles of the runner vanes at inlet and exist

OR

(b) (i) What is the percentage slip in reciprocating pump?

(ii) The centrifugal pump has the following characteristics .Outer diameter of impeller = 800 mm ; width of the impeller vane at outlet = 100 mm . angle of the impeller vanes at oulet = 40?.The impeller runs at 550 rpm and delivers 0.98 m3/s under an effective head of 35m.A 500 kW motor is used to drive the pump.Dtermine the monomeric ,mechanical and overall efficiencies of the pump.Assume water enters the impeller vanes radially at inlet.
