2007 Anna University B.Tech Textile Engineering TC 403 — TECHNOLOGY OF YARN AND FABRIC PRODUCTION Question paper
TC 403 — TECHNOLOGY OF YARN AND FABRIC PRODUCTION Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks) 1. Define Ginning percentage and lint index. 2. State the objectives of opening and cleaning. 3. State methods of blending for polyester/cotton, polyester/viscose and silk/cotton blends. 4. What are ‘point-to-point’ and ‘back-to-back’ actions at card? 5. How carbon paper technique is useful for roller eccentricity study in drafting? 6. What do you mean by ‘Degree of combing’? 7. Define : Knot factor, clearing efficiency and lapper. 8. Show the warp and weft cross sectional views for 3/1 Matt weave. 9. Calculate the number of beams doffed at sizing machine (speed 40 mpm) with a set length of 1200 meters for 8 hr shift. Allow 30 seconds for doffing and restarting a fresh beam. 10. Why are automatic looms under pick loose reed type? PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks) 11. Derive the various types of relations involving elements of fabric structure. 12. (a) (i) State the function of a cage. Why is it necessary to have a cage following a beater? (ii) Why is Krischner beater preferred at the end of a Blow room? State its normal speed range. (iii) With a neat sketch explain (worm and worm wheel type) ‘‘Knock-off motion’’ at scutcher. How exactly a fine cut appears across the lap following the doff? (iv) How do you control contamination percentage at ginning? (3 + 3 + 8 + 2) Or (b) (i) With neat sketch, indicating the driving arrangements, explain Grinding and Stripping at card. Mention the frequency of these operations. (3 + 3 + 2 + 2) (ii) Write a note on the role of mote knives, type of clothing and loading of cylinder at card. (2 + 2 + 2) 13. (a) (i) Explain the various stop motions at drawing. (ii) What are cone drums? Explain their utility and function for simplex builder motion. (iii) Write a note on a ‘‘Roller weighting’’ method in any drafting system. (7 + 5 + 4) Or (b) (i) State the need for even number of preparatory processes prior to combing. How does it exactly influence combed sliver quality? (2 + 3) (ii) What is ‘Noil’ percentage? How does it influence combed sliver quality? How is it controlled at comber? Explain briefly the method adopted with necessary sketch. (1 + 1 + 2 + 4) (iii) Explain the working of detaching rollers. (3) 14. (a) (i) What are the objectives of Ring spinning? With a neat sketch explain the working of builder motion. During an observation it was recorded as about a frame. What does it convey? (2 + 8 + 1) (ii) Explain the construction of opening roller and doffing tube at Rotor spinning. (2 ? 2 = 5) Or (b) (i) With a neat sketch explain the principle of friction spinning. (2) (ii) Explain the yarn formation in Jet spinning (sketch not required). What is the influence of core, core wild, wrapper and wild on yarn strength and elongation. State the reasons for formation of core wild and wrapper wild fibres. (12) (iii) What is ply yarn? State its need. List the approaches available for ply yarn production. (2) 15. (a) (i) State the objectives of winding. Classify the winding machines. (1 + 3) (ii) State the role of tensioner, clearerer and pattern breaking device. State the criteria followed in selecting tensioning and clearing levels. (10) (iii) Mention the stretch percentages in various zones of sizing machines. (2) Or (b) (i) A poplin sort contains 4771 ends of 40S K warp and a drawing order of 4 in a dent for body and 6 in a dent for selvedge. Reed used : 52S stock port. Number of dents allotted for selvedge : 20 in total. Compute the width of warp in Reed. (5) (ii) Write a note on types of creels in warping. (8) (iii) Explain briefly the mode of drying in sizing.
