III B.Tech I Semester Supplimentary Examinations, February 2008 PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY ( Common to Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics and Automobile Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks * * * * *
1. (a) Explain with neat sketch permeability test procedure for moulding sand. (b) Name a casting process which requires no drafting? Explain why it is so? [8+8]
2. (a) State the applications of Semi-Centrifugal and Centrifugal casting methods. (b) Write the advantages, limitations and product applications of investment casting methods. [8+8]
3. (a) Describe the reaction that take place in an oxy fuel gas torch. What is the level of temperature generated? Explain. (b) Describe the procedure to be followed in an oxy fuel gas welding operation? [8+8]
4. (a) Describe with neat sketch the CO2- MIG welding process and give its specific applications. (b) What is weldability? What factors influence it? [8+8]
5. (a) Compare among cold, warm and hot working of metals. (b) Sketch the sequence of operations involved in rolling a square section to I - Section. [8+8]
6. (a) What are the advantages of mechanical press over hydraulic press? (b) How do you estimate cutting forces in blanking and piercing? [8+8]
7. (a) Explain the effect of friction and strip tensions on rolling load and process. (b) A 20cm thick plate is flat forged to decrease thickness in steps to 10cm and 5cm. Determine total strain based on initial and final dimensions and also on the summation of the incremental strains using engineering strain and true strain. Give conclusion. [8+8]
8. (a) Distinguish between thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics. Give their applications. (b) List few components manufactured by the injection moulding and justify why they are manufactured by this process. [8+8]
