First Semester
Marine Engineering
MV 104 — APPLIED CHEMISTRY — I
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)
1. What is the unit for expressing hardness of water? Define it.
2. Differentiate between sludge and scale. Name the salts, which cause sludge and scale formation.
3. What is zeolite? Why is water softened by zeolite process unfit for use in boilers?
4. What is meant by thermal spalling of a refractory? Mention two causes of thermal spalling.
5. What are polymer foams? What are their special properties? Give examples of foamable polymers.
6. Give one example each for homo and heterochain polymers. Write their structures.
7. What are the factors that influence adhesive action of a polymer adhesive? Give four examples of polymer adhesives.
8. Under what situation solid lubricants are used? Give examples of solid lubricants? What are oildag and aquadag?
9. Name the gases that cause acid rain. What are the harmful effects of acid rain?
10. Distinguish between aerobic and anaerobic oxidation of sewage.

PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)
11. (i) A water sample gave the following constituents on analysis in mg/l = Mg (HCO3)2 = 73; CaSO4 = 68; MgCl2 = 95; MgSO4 = 12; Ca(HCO3)2 = 81; NaCl = 4.8. Calculate the cost of chemicals required for softening 1 lakh litres of water, if the purity of lime is 95% and that of soda is 90%. The cost per 100 Kg each of lime and soda are Rs. 75 and Rs. 2,500 respectively. (10)
(ii) What are cellulosics? How are they prepared and what are their uses? (6)
12. (a) (i) Giving the diagram and describe the demineralisation process of
softening of hard water. What are the disadvantages of this
method? What is the difference between soft water and
demineralised water? (10)
(ii) What is meant by electrodialysis? How is desalination of water carried out by electrodialysis? (6)
Or
(b) (i) What are disinfectants? Explain the various methods of disinfection of water. (8)
(ii) Write an account on the internal conditioning of water in boilers. (8)
13. (a) (i) What are the compositions, properties and uses of bronze, gun
metal, stainless steel, low carbon steel and high carbon steel? (10)
(ii) What are refractories? Discuss the following properties of refractories : refractoriness and thermal conductivity. (6)
Or
(b) (i) What are abrasives? How are they classified? Give an account of the preparation, properties and uses of any two abrasives. (10)
(ii) Explain addition and condensation polymerization giving two examples for each. (6)
14. (a) (i) Discuss the effect of polymer structure on properties. (10)
(ii) Distinguish between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Give two examples for each. (6)
Or
(b) (i) What are adhesives? What are the physical factors influencing the adhesive strength? Explain in detail. (10)
(ii) Mention the advantages and limitations of adhesives. (6)
15. (a) (i) Explain the following properties of lubricants and discuss their
significance :
(1) Viscosity index (2) Oilness
(3) Oxidation resistance (4) Cloud and pour points. (10)
(ii) Give an account on green house effect and ozone layer depletion. (6)
Or
(b) (i) Explain the following stages in sewage treatment (1) screening
(2) sedimentation (3) trickling filter method. (10)
(ii) Enumerate the biochemical effects of mercury and cyanide. (6)
