2007 Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Automobile Engineering IV B.Tech I Semester Regular Examinations, November 2007 VEHICLE DYNAMICS Question paper
Code No: RR412401 Set No. 3 IV B.Tech I Semester Regular Examinations, November 2007 VEHICLE DYNAMICS (Automobile Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks ? ? ? ? ? 1. Sphere of dia D floats half submerged in water. If the sphere is depressed slightly and released, determine the period of the vibration. What is this period when D = 1 meter. [16] 2. What is damping, explain the importance of the critical damping and find the expression for the logarithmic decrement. [16] 3. Derive an expression steady state and transient displacement for forced harmonic motion. [16] 4. A vibration measuring device is used to find the displacement, velocity and accel- eration of a machine running at 120rpm. If the natural frequency of the instrument is 5 Hz. and it shows 0.004 cm what are the three readings? Neglect damping. [16] 5. Derive the Hamilton principle for deriving the equation of motion for a continuous system. 6. (a) Derive the differential equation of motion for the flexural vibration of a beam of uniform cross section (b) Hence show that the frequency equation of such a cantilever beam of length L is given by cos ki L . cosh kiL = -1 where ki = (?/a)1/2 and a= (EI/?A)1/2 [16] 7. An Engine weighing 182 kgf is to be supported on four helical springs. When the engine speed is 900 r.p.m there is a primary vertical distrubing force of maximum value 31.8 kgf due to the unbalanced reciprocating weights. Assuming that the engine vibrates in the vertical direction mH neither horizontal nor angular move- ment, find the stiffness of each spring in kgf/cm of deflection to limit the maximum total periodic force on the foundations to 2.27 kgf. What will be the amplitude of vibration of the engine when speed is 600 rpm? [16] 8. Write short notes on (a) Reyleigh’s method (b) Dunkerley’s method (c) Holzer’s method
