B.Tech Textile Technology Question Paper

THEORY OF DYEING AND COLOUR PHYSICS

Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 ? 2 = 20 marks)

1. Write the molecular chain structure of cotton, wool, silk and nylon fibres.

2. What is Glass transition temperature and write its effect on dye ability?

3. What is the relationship between free volume and solubility?

4. What is yellowness and whiteness Index?

5. Explain the substantivity/affinity of dye to textile fibre.

6. Write the important properties of textile fibres.

7. What is meant by hue; lightness and saturation?

8. How fluorescent colours are produced in textile printing?

9. What are the essential properties of dye stuff used in textile applications?

10. Write the role of additives in dyeing.

PART B — (5 ? 16 = 80 marks)

11. (i) Write the Kubelka–Munk theory in detail.

(ii) Briefly discuss the colour matching using single constant K–M theory.

12. (a) (i) Write the Fick’s first and second law of diffusion.

(ii) Explain briefly the deviation of William Landed Ferry equation and its significance.

Or

(b) (i) Briefly discuss the principles of colour measuring instruments.

(ii) Explain how spectrophotometer is used as a colour measuring device in textile applications.

13. (a) What is metamerism? Briefly discuss the following in detail.

(i) Illuminant metamerism

(ii) Observer metamerism

(iii) Geometrical metamerism

(iv) Instrumental metamerism.

Or

(b) (i) Draw the flow chart for computer colour matching.

(ii) Explain in detail the colour matching using sixteen points reflectance data in textiles.

14. (a) (i) What is colour order systems?

(ii) Briefly explain the following :

(1) CIE systems
(2) CIE tristimulus values

Or

(b) Explain briefly the type of forces responsible for dye fixation on textile fibres.

15. (a) Explain the process of dyeing with respect to kinetic aspects and explain the factors which affects the dyeing.

Or

(b) (i) Explain briefly the theory of dyeing.

(ii) Write in detail the proposed theories for carrier dyeing.
